JOBURG CELEBRATES THE LAUNCH OF ITS FIRST FULL-SIZE FOOTBALL FIELD IN A CENTURY

In a landmark development for Johannesburg’s inner city, the launch of the Field of Dreams last Friday signifies a new chapter for youth sports in the area. Situated close to the M1 Selby offramp, this state-of-the-art sports complex is a collaboration between the Maharishi Invincibility Institute (MII), Standard Bank, and several partners, including Italtile and the BW Cares Foundation, spearheaded by the respected former national cricket captain, Dr Ali Bacher.

This facility stands as the first full-size football field built in Johannesburg’s CBD in a century, providing a beacon of hope for the youth who often rely on makeshift spaces to enjoy sports. The complex encompasses not only a professional-grade football pitch but also spectator stands, a multi-court sports area complete with basketball and netball courts, change rooms, and a clubhouse. It is designed to offer a safe and encouraging environment where young people can develop their skills.

MII CEO Dr Taddy Blecher lauded this project as a transformative initiative that underscores the potential of Johannesburg’s youth. “This is more than just a football field – it is a solid investment in our youth. For decades, this city was known for its gold and industry. Today, we are digging deeper for something far more valuable: the genius, creativity, and infinite potential within our young people,” he asserted. “The Field of Dreams will be a place where they build confidence, learn teamwork, and discover that their futures are boundless. It is a symbol of pride being restored to our city.”

Blecher’s vision extends beyond just sports; he envisions the Field of Dreams as a cornerstone for ‘Education Town’. This ambitious endeavour aims to establish a comprehensive inner-city campus dedicated to education, meditation, essential life skills, sports, and pathways to employment. The goal is to create a vibrant community space where thousands of young people can flourish daily.

Nkosinathi Manzana, Executive Head of Group Real Estate at Standard Bank, conveyed the company’s commitment to youth empowerment through sport. “We are proud to present the Field of Dreams in partnership with the Maharishi Invincibility Institute. We believe this will be a space that serves as a gateway where education and recreation come together to empower and nurture the next generation. This initiative is also a demonstration of our commitment to supporting and growing sporting excellence from the grassroots level,” he remarked.

The Field of Dreams stands as a testament to what civic partnership can achieve, aiming to restore the vibrancy of Johannesburg’s inner city and provide a platform where talent can thrive and be nurtured. As the sun sets over the pitch, it heralds not just a sporting facility but a renaissance for the youth of Johannesburg, fostering aspirations that reach beyond the horizon.
