JOHANNESBURG – The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has intensified its voter registration drive, calling on eligible citizens across the country to register to vote and verify their voter registration details as preparations continue for upcoming elections.
The voter registration campaign forms a critical part of the IEC’s constitutional mandate to ensure that every eligible South African has an opportunity to participate in the democratic process and help shape the future of the country.
As South Africa continues to strengthen its democratic institutions, the Commission is encouraging first-time voters, particularly young people turning 18, to take an active role in the nation’s governance by registering to vote and familiarising themselves with the electoral process.

Every Vote Counts
The IEC has emphasised that voter registration is the foundation of free, fair and credible elections.
Citizens who are already registered are encouraged to verify that their personal details and voting district information are correct to avoid any complications on election day. Those who have relocated since the previous election are advised to update their addresses and registration details.
“The strength of our democracy depends on active citizen participation. Registering to vote is not only a constitutional right but also a civic responsibility that allows citizens to influence the decisions that affect their communities and the nation as a whole,” the Commission said.
Youth Participation Remains Critical
Young people remain a key focus of the voter registration campaign, with the IEC working alongside educational institutions, community organisations, civil society groups and government stakeholders to increase voter awareness and participation among the youth.
South Africa’s youth represent a significant portion of the population, making their involvement in elections crucial to shaping future policies on education, employment, economic development, healthcare, and social transformation.
Political analysts have consistently highlighted the importance of youth participation in strengthening democracy and ensuring that elected leaders remain accountable to the people they serve.

Convenient Registration Options
To make registration more accessible, the IEC continues to offer multiple registration channels, including online registration through its digital platforms as well as physical registration opportunities at designated voter registration stations and IEC offices across the country.
Eligible citizens are encouraged to have a valid South African identity document, smart ID card or temporary identity certificate when registering.
The Commission has also utilised digital technologies and public awareness campaigns to reach voters in urban, peri-urban and rural communities, ensuring broad access to electoral services.
Strengthening Democracy Through Participation
Civil society organisations have welcomed ongoing voter registration efforts, noting that increased participation contributes to stronger democratic governance, transparency and accountability.
Community leaders have also urged residents to take advantage of voter registration opportunities, emphasizing that elections provide citizens with a direct voice in determining leadership and influencing public policy.
As election preparations continue, the IEC remains committed to ensuring that all eligible South Africans are able to exercise their democratic rights in a transparent, free and fair electoral environment.
Citizens are encouraged to register, verify their details and stay informed about upcoming registration weekends and election-related announcements.
By participating in the electoral process, South Africans continue to uphold the democratic values that have shaped the country’s constitutional democracy for more than three decades.
How to Register
Eligible voters can register or verify their voter registration details through the IEC’s official platforms or by visiting their nearest IEC office.
The Commission encourages all citizens to act early and ensure their details are up to date before registration deadlines are announced.
