DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA — The journey to one of South Africa’s most prestigious youth football tournaments begins this weekend as the 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge qualifiers get underway at Hoy Park Sports Complex in Durban.
From 30 to 31 May, some of the most promising young footballers in the eThekwini region will compete for a place in this year’s tournament, with 20 boys’ Under-18 teams and 15 ladies’ Under-20 teams vying for qualification in a fiercely contested two-day football showcase.
The annual qualifiers represent more than just a pathway into the main tournament. For many aspiring footballers, the Engen Knockout Challenge serves as an important stepping stone towards professional careers, offering a platform to display their talent in front of coaches, scouts and football development stakeholders.
With only 24 places available in the final tournament — equally divided between the boys’ and ladies’ divisions — every match will carry significant importance as teams chase their dreams of competing on one of the country’s leading youth football stages.
All eyes will be on defending ladies’ champions Durban Ladies FC, who return determined to defend the title they captured during the 2025 eThekwini tournament. In the boys’ division, Junior Stars FC will be aiming to maintain their dominance after lifting the Under-18 trophy last year.
The Engen Knockout Challenge has built a strong reputation over the years as a breeding ground for future football stars, helping to identify and nurture talent while promoting discipline, teamwork and personal growth among young athletes.
Tournament ambassador and former professional goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo said the competition continues to play a vital role in South Africa’s football development landscape.
