JOHANNESBURG — South African cinema is preparing for a heartfelt celebration of culture, community and healing with the release of Dear Sis Dolly, a feel-good family comedy-drama that promises laughter, inspiration and a powerful reminder of the importance of human connection.
Set to open in cinemas nationwide on 3 July 2026, the film will be screened at Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro cinemas across South Africa following a highly anticipated VIP red-carpet premiere scheduled for 23 June.
Produced by Known Associates Entertainment and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Twiggy Matiwana, Dear Sis Dolly draws inspiration from one of South Africa’s most beloved cultural institutions — Drum Magazine’s legendary Sis Dolly advice column — transforming it into a modern cinematic story that speaks to contemporary audiences while honouring a cherished legacy.
At the centre of the story is Khethiwe, portrayed by award-winning actress Didintle Khunou, an ambitious young psychologist determined to save a struggling community mental health centre in Meadowlands. Facing financial ruin and the closure of the centre she has dedicated her life to building, Khethiwe enters a competition to become Drum Magazine’s next Sis Dolly.
What begins as a desperate attempt to save her community soon becomes a transformative personal journey as she discovers that helping others often requires confronting her own unresolved pain.
The film combines humour, romance, family dynamics and emotional depth, creating a uniquely South African story rooted in resilience, compassion and hope.
A Celebration of South African Storytelling
Director Twiggy Matiwana says the project is deeply personal, inspired by her childhood memories of reading Drum Magazine and being captivated by the wisdom and cultural significance of Sis Dolly.
“Drum Magazine was more than just a publication. It was a mirror, a cultural compass and a lifeline for many South Africans. Sis Dolly represented empathy, honesty and guidance, and we wanted to bring that spirit to a new generation through film.”
The production also boasts an impressive cast featuring some of South Africa’s most celebrated performers.
Alongside Didintle Khunou, audiences can expect memorable performances from Dineo Langa, S’thandiwe Kgoroge, Natasha Thahane, Brighton Ngoma, legendary actress and singerAbigail Kubeka, and acclaimed veteran actorDr Jerry Mofokeng-Makhetha.
The combination of established icons and contemporary stars creates a powerful ensemble that reflects the richness and diversity of South African entertainment.
Industry Heavyweights Behind the Project
The film is produced by Tshepiso Chikapa Phiri, Moroba Nkawe and Joel Chikapa Phiri of Known Associates Entertainment, with renowned entrepreneur and advertising pioneer Dr Peter Vundla making his feature film debut as Executive Producer.
For Tshepiso Chikapa Phiri, Dear Sis Dolly represents more than entertainment.
“We wanted to create a modern South African love letter that celebrates who we are. Sis Dolly is an icon that generations have grown up with, and this film captures the humour, heart and humanity that made her such an important figure in our culture.”
The producers believe the film’s themes of self-love, community healing and personal growth will resonate strongly with audiences navigating the challenges of modern life.
A Story with Heart
Beyond its comedic moments and entertaining storyline, Dear Sis Dolly tackles important social themes including mental health, family relationships, identity and community support.
The film explores how ordinary people become extraordinary through compassion and service, highlighting the transformative power of empathy in a world often defined by division and uncertainty.
It is this balance of humour and heartfelt storytelling that positions Dear Sis Dolly as one of the standout South African productions of 2026.
A New Chapter for Local Cinema
The release also underscores the continued growth of South Africa’s film industry, with Known Associates Entertainment building a reputation for producing compelling local content that resonates both domestically and internationally.
Having recently celebrated major successes including the award-winning Death of a Whistleblower, the company continues to champion authentic African stories that reflect the country’s realities, aspirations and cultural richness.
As anticipation builds ahead of its national release, Dear Sis Dolly is poised to become more than just a film. It is a celebration of South African resilience, humour, community and the timeless wisdom that has connected generations through one of the country’s most beloved cultural icons.
When it arrives in cinemas on 3 July, audiences can expect a moving, uplifting and unmistakably South African experience — one that truly delivers on its promise of “giving you something you can feel.”
