The road to youth football glory is officially underway in Cape Town after 32 talented teams secured qualification for the highly anticipated 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge, one of South Africa’s premier youth football tournaments.

Following a fiercely contested qualification campaign hosted by SAFA Cape Town, the stage is now set for three days of exciting football action when the Cape Town leg of the tournament takes place from 26 to 28 June at Erica Park Stadium.

This year’s competition is being staged under the inspiring theme, “Where Diski Legends Start,” a fitting reminder of the tournament’s longstanding reputation as a launchpad for some of South Africa’s brightest football talents.

With regional bragging rights and qualification for the prestigious national Engen Champ of Champs tournament at stake, anticipation is building among players, coaches and supporters across the Mother City.

The official tournament draw is scheduled to take place on Monday, 15 June, where participating teams will discover their paths to potential glory.

Over the years, the Engen Knockout Challenge has established itself as one of the country’s most important youth football development platforms, providing young players with an opportunity to showcase their abilities, gain valuable competitive experience and attract the attention of scouts and football stakeholders.

This year’s Cape Town edition will feature 16 Boys’ Under-18 teams and 16 Girls’ Under-20 teams, bringing together some of the region’s most exciting emerging talent.

All eyes will be on defending Boys’ Under-18 champions Cape Town City FC, who return determined to retain their title and continue their impressive legacy in the competition. Equally motivated will be reigning Girls’ Under-20 champions Cape Town Roses, who enter the tournament aiming to defend their crown against a highly competitive field.

The tournament promises a compelling mix of established youth football powerhouses and ambitious challengers eager to make their mark on one of South Africa’s biggest grassroots football stages.

Among the qualified Boys’ Under-18 teams are Antalyaspor JMP CT, Cape Town City FC, Central Schools Football, District Six Mitchells Plain, Everton FC, Eyethu FC, Grassy Park United, Hellenic FC, Rising Stars FC, SAFA Cape Town Academy, South End FC, Stellenbosch FC, Table View FC, Ubuntu Football Academy, United Aces and Valhalla United.

The Girls’ Under-20 division will feature Badgers Ladies FC, CPUT Ladies, Cape Town Roses, Dangerous Heroes, Goal Hunters FC, HBUFC, Magic Ladies FC, Otha United, Real Brazilians Ladies FC, RV United, Rygersdal FC, Salt River Blackpool FC, Santos FC, Spurs WFC, Stellenbosch FC and Ubuntu Football Academy.

The diversity and quality of teams participating underline the strength of football development structures across the Western Cape and the growing investment in both boys’ and girls’ football.

Beyond the competition itself, the Engen Knockout Challenge remains a celebration of youth empowerment, discipline and opportunity. The tournament has produced numerous players who have gone on to represent professional clubs and national teams, cementing its status as one of the country’s most influential development initiatives.

As the countdown to kick-off continues, football fans can expect an exciting showcase of skill, passion and determination as Cape Town’s future stars compete for the chance to write their names into Engen Knockout Challenge history.

For many participants, the journey begins at Erica Park Stadium. For a select few, it could be the first step towards becoming the next generation of South African football legends.
