DURBAN — Durban’s iconic beachfront is set to become a showcase of speed, endurance and community spirit when the Boxer Super Run Durban returns on Sunday, 18 October 2026, with thousands of runners preparing to take on a fast, flat and scenic 5km course.

Celebrating its fourth anniversary, the event will bring together elite athletes, competitive club runners, first-time participants, families and social runners for a race designed to make 5km road running accessible while retaining the intensity of elite competition.

The 2026 Durban edition is presented by Boxer Superstores, in partnership with Powerade and Rexona, and forms part of a two-event series that also heads to Johannesburg on 15 November. The Durban race has already sold out.

A course built for speed

The Durban route is expected to offer runners a combination of speed and scenery, beginning on Snell Parade near Blue Lagoon Park before heading towards Battery Beach Road.

From Snell Parade, runners will turn onto Battery Beach Road, continue onto Masabalala Yengwa Avenue and then make their way onto the Durban beachfront promenade, finishing at Blue Lagoon Park.

The route brings some of Durban’s most recognisable landmarks into the race experience, including the Golden Mile, Battery Beach and the Suncoast precinct, with the Indian Ocean providing a striking backdrop.

For athletes chasing personal bests, the relatively flat course provides an opportunity to attack the clock, while recreational runners can enjoy the atmosphere and scenery.

‘5km racing at its best’

Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports, says the event remains focused on making the 5km distance exciting and accessible to everyone.

“The Boxer Super Run has always been about making the 5km accessible, exciting and enjoyable for everyone.”

Meyer says Durban’s beachfront, flat route and strong running community provide the ideal environment for the fourth anniversary edition.

Whether runners are pursuing a personal best, attempting their first 5km or simply enjoying the event with friends and family, the aim is to create an experience that combines competitive racing with the energy of a major community sporting event.

From social runners to elite athletes

A defining feature of the Boxer Super Run is its multi-wave format, allowing participants to select an experience that matches their running goals.

The Open Wave caters for everyone from club and serious runners to schools, first-time participants and those who prefer an earlier start.

The Super Social Wave, meanwhile, puts the emphasis on fun, groups and participation, welcoming company teams, charities and runners looking for a more relaxed race-day experience.

The elite field will then take centre stage, with separate Elite Women and Elite Men races providing a high-level test of speed, endurance and race strategy.

The event’s wave format is designed to bring very different types of runners together while giving each group its own race-day experience.

Boxer backs active communities

Lee-Ann Pillay, Head of Marketing at Boxer Superstores, says the Durban route will give participants an opportunity to experience the city’s iconic coastline while testing themselves over the 5km distance.

She says the event’s appeal lies in its ability to accommodate both serious athletes and participants who simply want to enjoy an active day with friends and family.

“The fast and flat 5km route provides the ideal platform for runners looking to test themselves against the clock, chase a personal best or simply enjoy the energy of race day,” says Pillay.

For the elite field, the course will demand speed, endurance and tactical awareness, while Open and Super Social Wave participants can take on the challenge at their own pace.

More than a race

Since its launch in 2023, the Boxer Super Run has established itself around the concept that 5km racing is for everyone — from elite athletes pursuing victory to newcomers discovering road running for the first time.

The 2026 series has also expanded its race-day partnerships, with Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa returning as the Official Hydration Partner and Rexona joining as the Official Deodorant Sponsor.

The Durban event will also offer R147,200 in total prize money, with the Elite Women and Elite Men winners each set to receive R20,000. Prize money will also be available across Open Wave age categories.

Durban gets ready to run

With its combination of a fast course, ocean views, elite competition and an inclusive race-day format, the Boxer Super Run Durban is shaping up as one of KwaZulu-Natal’s major road-running highlights of October.
