JOHANNESBURG, September 2026 — South Africa’s musical diversity is taking centre stage this Heritage Month as Audiomack celebrates the sounds, artists and cultural influences that continue to shape the country’s distinctive sonic identity through its Hometown Heroes provincial playlists.
The initiative brings together established artists, emerging voices and genre-defining sounds from Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, creating a musical journey through some of the country’s most influential regional music scenes.
South Africa’s Heritage Month, observed throughout September, celebrates the country’s diverse cultural traditions and their role in shaping its present and future.
For Audiomack, music is an important part of that heritage — not simply preserving where sounds come from, but giving audiences new ways to discover how those sounds continue to evolve.
Limpopo’s unmistakable sound
The Hometown Heroes: Limpopo playlist captures the province’s distinctive musical character through a mix of established favourites and artists pushing its sound forward.
The playlist features names including Makhadzi, King Monada, Darque, K-Zaka, Ba Bethe Gaoshazen, CK the DJ, Obiie King, TorQue and Shandesh, among others.
Audiomack’s platform currently lists the Limpopo playlist as a 32-track collection, with artists such as Makhadzi represented on the playlist.
The result is a snapshot of a province whose music has increasingly become a powerful part of South Africa’s contemporary cultural export.
KwaZulu-Natal’s rich musical tapestry
In KwaZulu-Natal, the playlist moves across Maskandi, Gqom, Afro-pop and contemporary African sounds, reflecting the province’s ability to preserve traditional musical influences while continually producing new forms of expression.
Featured artists include Mjolisi, Mawhoo, Kelly Khumalo, Jikijiki, Nobuhle, Que DJ, Nomfundo Moh and Q Twins.
Audiomack also highlights the newly launched Zulu Queens playlist, further expanding the platform’s focus on women and contemporary voices emerging from the province’s vibrant music ecosystem. The Hometown Heroes: KwaZulu-Natal playlist is currently listed on Audiomack alongside related South African music collections.
Gauteng: where genres collide and new sounds emerge
Gauteng’s playlist reflects the province’s role as one of South Africa’s most dynamic musical centres, bringing together the energy of Amapiano, hip-hop, house and electronic music.
The collection features artists including Maglera Doe Boy, FLVME, SjavasDaDeejay, Tyler ICU, DJ Sliq, MashBeatz, Al Xapo & Benzoo and Royal Musiq.
The current Audiomack playlist contains 38 tracks, with recent selections spanning artists such as Mawelele, Royal Musiq, DJ Sliqe, MashBeatz, Maglera Doe Boy, FLVME, SjavasDaDeejay and Tyler ICU.
It offers a snapshot of Gauteng’s constantly shifting soundscape — a space where established genres meet experimentation and where new musical movements can move rapidly from local scenes to national and international audiences.
Music as a living form of heritage
Together, the playlists position music as a living expression of South African heritage — one that changes with every generation while remaining rooted in place, language, community and culture.
Audiomack has continued expanding its South Africa-focused music offering, with dedicated spaces covering sounds including Amapiano, Maskandi, 3-Step, hip-hop, Afro-house and other emerging genres.
Its broader Hometown Heroes: South Africa playlist similarly brings together artists and sounds from across the country, underscoring the breadth of the local music ecosystem. The playlist was updated in September 2026 and features 100 tracks.
The significance extends beyond nostalgia. By placing established artists alongside emerging talent, the playlists create discovery pathways for listeners while giving artists another platform through which their music can reach audiences.
