Soweto Kota Festival 2026: The Ultimate Food & Culture Experience

Media launch sets the stage for a celebration of food, culture, entrepreneurship and township pride

SOWETO — The countdown to the 2026 Soweto Kota Festival has officially begun, following a vibrant media launch at the Soweto Theatre that brought together festival organisers, sponsors, media representatives, tourism stakeholders and community leaders ahead of one of Soweto’s most anticipated food and lifestyle celebrations.

Set to take place on 5 and 6 September 2026 at Elkah Cricket Oval in Rockville, Soweto, the ninth edition of the festival promises to bring together the very best of township food, music, culture, entertainment, entrepreneurship and community.

Presented by Aromat, the Soweto Kota Festival has evolved beyond a celebration of one of South Africa’s most iconic township foods. It has become a platform for local enterprise, creativity and cultural expression, providing small businesses, food traders, entrepreneurs and creatives with an opportunity to connect directly with audiences and grow their visibility.

The media launch reflected the breadth of partnerships behind the festival, with representatives from Sovereign, PayShap, First Choice, SASKO, Soweto TV, Soweto Tourism, Aromat and Soweto Theatre, among others, sharing their perspectives on the significance of the event.

Among those addressing guests were Gaolebalwe Ramorula of Sovereign, PayShap representative Lindiwe Mathabela, Mandla Tshali of First Choice, Katlego Shabangu of SASKO, Thabang Mnisi of Soweto TV, Thato Mothopeng, CEO of Soweto Tourism, Dimpho Phoshoko, Aromat Brand Manager, and Lungile Masondo, Project Manager: Marketing and Communications at Soweto Theatre.

More than a food festival

The message emerging from the launch was clear: the Soweto Kota Festival is about far more than food.

Festival founder Sidwell Tshingilane has positioned the festival as a celebration of Soweto’s heritage, community and entrepreneurial spirit — using food as a powerful vehicle to bring people together while creating economic opportunities for township businesses.

With more than 70 kota vendors and general traders expected to participate, the festival provides a significant platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their products, reach new customers and participate in an event that celebrates township innovation.

For sponsors, the festival provides an equally valuable opportunity to engage authentically with consumers and communities.

Gaolebalwe Ramorula of Sovereign highlighted the importance of platforms that create meaningful connections between brands and communities, while Lindiwe Mathabela of PayShap emphasised the growing importance of convenient digital payment solutions for consumers and small businesses operating within the township economy. The participation of PayShap also reflects the changing nature of township commerce, where digital payments are increasingly becoming part of the everyday consumer experience.

Brands backing township enterprise

For First Choice, the festival represents an opportunity to support an event deeply rooted in community and food culture.

Mandla Tshali spoke to the value of partnerships that enable brands to get closer to consumers while contributing to initiatives that have a tangible community impact.

Meanwhile, Katlego Shabangu of SASKO highlighted the continued growth of the Soweto Kota Festival and the opportunities it creates for entrepreneurs and businesses. Food, she noted, remains one of the most powerful ways of bringing people together — and township food culture provides a unique expression of South Africa’s identity.

As the festival’s presenting partner, Aromat is also placing itself at the centre of an experience built around flavour, creativity and community.

Dimpho Phoshoko, Aromat Brand Manager, expressed excitement about the partnership and the opportunity for the brand to be part of a festival whose identity is closely connected to food and township culture.

The partnership reinforces the festival’s evolution into a major consumer and cultural platform, while keeping its roots firmly planted in Soweto.

Telling Soweto’s stories

The role of media also emerged as a significant theme during the launch.

Thabang Mnisi of Soweto TV highlighted the importance of media platforms in telling authentic township stories and ensuring that local initiatives receive the visibility they deserve.

For a festival built around local entrepreneurs and cultural expression, media exposure can be critical in helping businesses reach audiences beyond their immediate communities.

The Soweto Kota Festival therefore sits at the intersection of food, entertainment, business and storytelling — providing a platform through which township businesses can tell their stories while audiences experience the diversity of Soweto’s creative economy.

Strengthening Soweto’s tourism offering

The festival’s significance extends into tourism.

Thato Mothopeng, CEO of Soweto Tourism, highlighted the potential of major events to strengthen Soweto’s tourism proposition by attracting visitors, showcasing local culture and contributing to the township’s local economy.

Food festivals have increasingly become important tourism attractions, offering visitors an opportunity to experience destinations through their cuisine, music, traditions and people.

The Soweto Kota Festival taps directly into that opportunity, presenting an authentic township experience that combines food with entertainment, lifestyle and culture.

A return to where it all began

The choice of Soweto Theatre as the venue for the media launch carried particular significance.

The theatre was the venue for the inaugural Soweto Kota Festival nine years ago. Returning to the same venue for the 2026 media launch therefore provided a powerful reminder of how far the festival has travelled since its beginnings.

Lungile Masondo, Project Manager: Marketing and Communications at Soweto Theatre, reflected on the importance of creating spaces where culture, creativity and community initiatives can meet.

The connection between the theatre and the festival also speaks to the broader cultural ecosystem that continues to shape Soweto — from performing arts and music to food, entrepreneurship and tourism.

A weekend of flavour, culture and entertainment

Festivalgoers can expect a packed weekend celebrating the creativity of township food entrepreneurs and the broader culture of Soweto.

The programme is expected to feature an array of kota creations, township cuisine, live entertainment, cultural experiences, lifestyle activations and opportunities to support local businesses.

At its heart will be the kota — a distinctly South African township creation that has grown from humble street-food origins into a cultural phenomenon.

The festival celebrates that evolution while giving the entrepreneurs behind the food an opportunity to turn their culinary creativity into sustainable commercial opportunities.

The countdown begins

With the media launch now concluded, attention turns to 5 and 6 September, when Elkah Cricket Oval will become a meeting point for food lovers, families, entrepreneurs, creatives, brands and visitors from across Johannesburg and beyond.

Nine years after its inception, the Soweto Kota Festival continues to demonstrate the power of township culture to create experiences that are commercially viable, culturally significant and deeply rooted in community.

The 2026 edition promises to build on that legacy — bringing together food, flavour, music, culture, entrepreneurship, tourism and community in one of Soweto’s biggest celebrations.

The message from the launch was unmistakable: the kota may be the hero of the festival, but the bigger story is Soweto itself — its people, its creativity, its businesses and its enduring cultural influence.

The countdown to the Soweto Kota Festival 2026 is officially on.
