JOHANNESBURG – The Black Coffee Foundation has broadened the impact of its flagship Gift of Sight by Black Coffee initiative by introducing a dedicated dental care programme for primary school learners, reinforcing its mission to improve children’s health, wellbeing and educational outcomes across South Africa.
The expanded programme launched at Zenzeleni Primary School in Alexandra from 27 to 29 July 2026, where learners are receiving comprehensive eye screenings, vision testing, oral health assessments and referrals for follow-up care where needed.
The move marks a significant milestone in the Foundation’s holistic approach to supporting children’s development, recognising that good vision and oral health are essential to academic success, confidence and overall quality of life.
A holistic approach to children’s health
Having already transformed the lives of thousands of learners through access to eye care, the Gift of Sight by Black Coffee programme is now broadening its reach to ensure children receive multiple essential healthcare services under one initiative.
By identifying vision and dental issues early, the Foundation aims to remove preventable barriers that often affect concentration, classroom performance and self-esteem.
The integrated healthcare model is designed to give children a stronger foundation for learning while promoting healthier futures for their families and communities.
Building on a successful initiative
Since its inception, the Gift of Sight programme has provided eye examinations and vision support to thousands of schoolchildren, helping many learners who were previously struggling with undiagnosed vision problems.
The addition of dental screenings strengthens the programme’s long-term impact by addressing another critical area of child health that is often overlooked in underserved communities.
The initiative continues to emphasise early intervention as one of the most effective ways to improve children’s educational and developmental outcomes.

Strong partnerships driving greater impact
The programme is delivered in partnership with Lepas, the Foundation’s official mobility partner, ensuring healthcare teams can reach communities where services are needed most.
The Foundation also continues to work alongside long-standing partners including Tania Noach Optometrists, the South African Optometric Association (SAOA), Love Maison33, and JHB VIP, all of whom have played a significant role in expanding access to quality eye care.
As the initiative grows, several new organisations have joined the programme to further strengthen its reach.
Fourways Dental Studio will lead the newly introduced dental assessments and provide follow-up treatment where required, while Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital will support the continuation of eye-testing services.
The Foundation has also welcomed Diamonds Do Good as a new investment partner, reinforcing its commitment to delivering sustainable healthcare programmes for children.

Lungie Maphumulo, Chief Executive Officer of the Black Coffee Foundation, said expanding the programme reflects the organisation’s belief that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive without preventable health challenges standing in the way.

She also acknowledged the Foundation’s partners for helping expand the programme’s reach and impact.
