JOHANNESBURG – Lesotho’s national 10km record holder Neheng Khatala is determined to turn months of hard work into podium success when she lines up for the 2026 Totalsports Women’s Race in Durban on 2 August and Johannesburg on 16 August, two of South Africa’s premier Women’s Month sporting celebrations.
Fresh off an impressive fifth-place finish in 32:04 at the highly competitive Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K, Khatala believes she is in peak condition to challenge Africa’s leading distance runners in the iconic women-only road running event.
Having tested herself against a world-class elite field earlier this month, the Lesotho star is optimistic that disciplined execution will be the key to success.
“If I execute my race plan well, I believe a great result will follow,” said Khatala. “Every race is an opportunity to improve, and I want to make the most of it.”
Celebrating the Power of Women Through Sport
For Khatala, the Totalsports Women’s Race represents much more than a competitive road race.
The annual event has become one of South Africa’s largest celebrations of women in sport, bringing together elite athletes, recreational runners and first-time participants in a shared celebration of strength, resilience and unity.
“It means a great deal to compete in an event that brings thousands of women together,” she said.
“It shows the power of women supporting and inspiring one another. Running unites us regardless of where we come from or our backgrounds. As an athlete from Lesotho, it’s an honour to be part of an event that celebrates women’s strength and determination.”

Driven by Personal Growth
Despite already establishing herself among Southern Africa’s leading road runners, Khatala insists her greatest competition remains herself.
She believes every race provides an opportunity to improve physically and mentally while inspiring the next generation of female athletes.
“My biggest motivation is becoming the best version of myself,” she explained.
“Every race teaches me something new and reminds me that growth comes through consistency and hard work.”
Offering encouragement to aspiring runners, Khatala urged women to embrace their own journeys rather than comparing themselves with others.
“Believe in yourself, be patient with your progress and never compare your journey to anyone else’s. Every champion started with a single step.”
Inspired by the Energy of the Crowd
The Totalsports Women’s Race is renowned not only for attracting elite athletes but also for its vibrant race-day atmosphere, with thousands of spectators lining the streets in support of participants.
Khatala says the encouragement from supporters often provides the extra motivation needed during the toughest stages of competition.
“Crowd support always gives me an extra boost, especially when the race gets difficult,” she said.
“Hearing people cheering reminds me to keep fighting until the finish line.”
Winning the race, she added, would be a career-defining achievement.
“It would reward the hard work my coach and I have invested and make my family, supporters and my country proud. It would also motivate me to pursue even bigger goals in my athletics career.”
Organisers Welcome African Distance Running Star
Stillwater Sports Managing Director Michael Meyer welcomed Khatala’s return, saying her participation further strengthens the elite field for this year’s event.
“We are delighted to welcome Neheng back to the Totalsports Women’s Race. She is one of Africa’s outstanding distance runners, and we look forward to watching her compete alongside thousands of women celebrating the joy of running.”
Nikki Crous, Head of Marketing at Totalsports, believes Khatala’s presence will inspire runners across all levels.
“As one of Africa’s leading distance runners, Neheng’s participation adds tremendous excitement to the event and serves as an inspiration to women of all ages and abilities. We look forward to cheering her on in Durban and Johannesburg.”
A Celebration Beyond the Finish Line
This year’s Totalsports Women’s Race promises more than world-class road running.
With all three races in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg officially sold out, thousands of participants will celebrate Women’s Month through fitness, community and entertainment.
Award-winning South African music star Busiswa will headline live performances at all three events, adding to the festive atmosphere that has become synonymous with the race.
The event also continues its long-standing partnership with PinkDrive, raising awareness around breast cancer education and supporting free screening services for medically uninsured South Africans.
As the countdown to race day continues, Khatala has one message for every woman preparing to stand on the start line.
“Believe in yourself, trust your preparation and enjoy every step of the journey. Whether you’re running for a personal best, your health or simply the joy of finishing, your effort matters. Just standing on the start line is already a victory.”
With elite athletes chasing glory and thousands of women running in celebration of health, empowerment and unity, the 2026 Totalsports Women’s Race is once again set to showcase why it remains one of South Africa’s most inspiring sporting events.
