JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s cocktail culture has a new champion.
After an intense battle of creativity, precision and mixology excellence, George Hunter has been crowned South Africa’s Diageo World Class Champion 2026, earning the honour of representing the country at one of the world’s most prestigious bartending competitions later this year.
Hosted at Naked Woolf in Rosebank, the national finals brought together some of South Africa’s finest bartenders, each competing through a series of demanding challenges that tested innovation, technical skill, storytelling and the ability to transform premium spirits into unforgettable drinking experiences.
Emerging victorious, Hunter secured his place among the world’s elite, where he will compete against national champions from more than 50 countries for the coveted title of World Class Global Bartender of the Year 2026.
A Global Stage for Cocktail Excellence
Since its launch in 2009, Diageo World Class has become the gold standard of international bartending competitions, celebrating the artistry, creativity and craftsmanship behind the world’s best cocktails while raising professional standards across the global hospitality industry.
More than a competition, World Class serves as an educational platform that develops bartenders into ambassadors of premium spirits, inspiring innovation and elevating cocktail culture around the world.
Hunter’s victory now places him among an exclusive group of mixologists who will compete on the international stage, showcasing not only their technical expertise but also the creativity and hospitality that define modern bartending.
A Victory Earned Through Passion
Reflecting on his achievement, Hunter described the competition as one of the most rewarding experiences of his professional journey.
“I am proud to be part of a competition of this scale, enriching bartenders all around. World Class is a tough competition, but you are meant to be pushed to learn and grow. I am glad I rose to the occasion and won knowing I gave it my all.”
He added that representing South Africa internationally is both an honour and a responsibility.
“I am looking forward to competing on the global stage.”
Celebrating Craftsmanship
The competition was anchored by Don Julio, whose premium tequila portfolio continues to play a central role in promoting cocktail culture and celebrating excellence within the hospitality industry.
According to Cebisa Luzipho, Culture Manager for Don Julio South, West and Central Africa at Diageo, the World Class platform perfectly reflects the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and creative expression.
“As a brand intersecting culture and creativity, we champion craftsmanship by making tastemakers and taste innovators part of our journey at every level.”
She explained that Don Julio’s philosophy remains rooted in the passion and dedication of its founder, Don Julio González, whose pursuit of excellence continues to inspire bartenders across the world.
“World Class is a platform that allows us to celebrate the craftsmanship of mixologists and bartenders, honouring their creativity and excellence in our industry.”
South Africa’s Cocktail Culture Continues to Rise
Hunter’s victory comes at a time when South Africa’s premium hospitality and cocktail scene continues to gain international recognition.
From award-winning bars and luxury restaurants to globally respected mixologists, the country’s hospitality industry has established itself as one of Africa’s most innovative, with local talent increasingly competing—and winning—on the world stage.
As cocktail culture evolves beyond simply serving drinks into an art form that combines flavour, storytelling and theatrical presentation, competitions like Diageo World Class continue to inspire a new generation of bartenders to push creative boundaries.
With the global finals fast approaching, George Hunter now carries the hopes of South Africa’s hospitality industry as he prepares to compete against the world’s finest mixologists.
His journey from the national stage in Johannesburg to the international spotlight is more than a personal triumph—it is a celebration of South African creativity, craftsmanship and the growing influence of the country’s premium lifestyle and cocktail culture on the global stage.
