CAPE TOWN, 17 June 2026 — South Africa’s leading youth football development competition, the Engen Knockout Challenge, has officially launched its 2026 edition under an inspiring new theme, Where Diski Legends Start,” reaffirming its commitment to nurturing the country’s future football stars and strengthening the broader football ecosystem.

The tournament was officially unveiled during a launch event held at Engen’s Head Office in Cape Town on Monday, bringing together football administrators, development partners, coaches and club representatives ahead of the opening leg of the competition, which will take place at Erica Park Grounds from 26 to 28 June.

For more than two decades, the Engen Knockout Challenge has established itself as one of South Africa’s most important football development platforms, producing players who have gone on to represent top clubs locally and abroad, while simultaneously creating opportunities for coaches, referees, administrators and support personnel to grow within the game.

Speaking at the launch, Engen Communications Manager Gavin Smith said the new campaign theme reflects the tournament’s broader purpose and enduring legacy.

“The Engen Knockout Challenge has produced stars who have gone on to play professionally and internationally, but it is also about the memories that are created along the way. Not everyone will become a professional footballer, but many will cherish the experience of being involved in a competition like this for the rest of their lives.”

Smith added that becoming a legend is about much more than lifting trophies or securing professional contracts.

“We often focus on the players who become stars, but a legend is really a story. It is something you take away from the tournament. These are the moments and memories that participants speak about at school the next day and carry with them for years to come. Those stories eventually become the legends of tomorrow, and we believe the Engen Knockout Challenge continues to be a catalyst for creating those experiences.”

SAFA Praises Continued Investment in Grassroots Football

The significance of the tournament was echoed by SAFA Cape Town Vice-President Andrew Borthman, who praised Engen for its unwavering commitment to football development.

According to Borthman, partnerships such as the Engen Knockout Challenge remain vital in ensuring that young talent across the country receives opportunities to develop and compete at a high level.

“Without partnerships such as this, we would not be able to fulfil some of our mandates as SAFA Cape Town when it comes to developing talent. The talent developed through the Engen Knockout Challenge is not limited to players. It also includes coaches, referees, administrators and many others who play an important role in football development.”

He expressed confidence that the 2026 edition would once again showcase the depth of football talent emerging from communities across the country.

Defending Champions Set for Tough Title Defences

The launch also featured the official draw for the Cape Town leg of the tournament, setting the stage for highly competitive battles in both the Boys U-18 and Girls U-20 divisions.

Defending Boys U-18 champions Cape Town City FC face a challenging road to retaining their crown after being drawn in Group C alongside Hellenic, Central Schools Football and South End FC.
