A renewed sense of stability has returned to Ditsepu Secondary School following a targeted intervention by Meropa Casino & Entertainment World—an initiative that combined critical infrastructure support with a deeply human touch.

Faced with rising concerns around late arrivals, absenteeism, and general safety, the school in Ga Maja reached out for assistance. What followed was a decisive response: the funding and construction of a new palisade fence valued at R120,000, effectively restoring a secure perimeter around the campus.

Rebuilding a Safe Learning Environment

For school leadership, the issue was urgent. Without a clearly defined boundary, managing access to the school grounds had become increasingly difficult—impacting both discipline and the overall learning environment.

“It was a security measures request,” explains Charlene Ludick, General Manager at Meropa. The solution—a robust palisade fence—was selected for its durability, low maintenance, and effectiveness in deterring unauthorised access.

More than just a physical barrier, the installation has re-established a sense of order and protection, allowing educators to refocus on teaching and learners to engage without distraction.

Beyond Infrastructure: Restoring Confidence

Recognising that meaningful impact extends beyond bricks and steel, Meropa complemented the project with a donation of school shoes to learners—an intervention that speaks directly to dignity and inclusion.

For many pupils, access to proper footwear is not guaranteed. The donation ensures that learners can return to school not only equipped, but confident—removing a subtle yet significant barrier to participation.

A Community Response at the Right Time

According to Principal Seroba Frank Malefo, the support arrived at a critical moment.

“There was real concern around the safety of our learners and the condition of our school,” he says. “This intervention has helped us restore stability and focus. It means a great deal to our entire school community.”

The dual approach—addressing both security and student welfare—has had an immediate impact, helping the school regain a sense of normality.

The Role of Local Institutions

In communities where resources are often stretched, partnerships between schools and local institutions can prove transformative. Meropa’s involvement underscores the role that private sector stakeholders can play in supporting education—not as a once-off gesture, but as part of a broader commitment to community development.

Small Actions, Lasting Change

While the installation of a fence and donation of shoes may appear modest in scale, their effect is far-reaching. Safety has been restored. Attendance is improving. And perhaps most importantly, learners are once again stepping into school with confidence and purpose.

In Ga Maja, it’s a reminder that when support meets need at the right moment, even simple interventions can reshape the future.
