Cape Town, South Africa — South Africa’s next generation of competitive gaming talent took centre stage as Ridhaa April emerged victorious at the Telkom VS Gaming High School eSports League 2026, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).

The 16-year-old from the School of IT Think Digital Academy delivered a standout performance against some of the country’s most promising school-level players, securing the championship title and booking his place in the elite Telkom VS Gaming eDiski division, which continues over the weekend.

A Breakthrough Moment for Young Talent

The High School eSports League officially opened the three-day Telkom VS Gaming tournament, setting the tone for what has become one of South Africa’s premier competitive gaming showcases.

April’s triumph underscores the rapid growth of structured eSports at school level—where discipline, strategy, and technical skill are increasingly being honed through formal competition.

Speaking after his win, April acknowledged the intensity of the competition:

“I saw some very impressive players throughout the competition, which clearly shows how competitive eSports has become, even at school level.”

Discipline, Preparation, and the Competitive Edge

Behind April’s victory lies a foundation of consistent preparation and a mindset focused on continuous improvement—key attributes in the fast-evolving world of competitive gaming.

“I have been practising a lot in preparation for this tournament. With gaming, you have to keep improving because there is always a new and better way of competing,” he said.

Despite his success, the young champion remains focused on the bigger challenge ahead: testing himself against the country’s top-tier players in the eDiski division.

“I know I did well today, but there is still a lot of work to be done to reach the high level set by some of the best gamers.”

Building a National eSports Pipeline

The High School eSports League forms a critical component of the broader Telkom VS Gaming ecosystem, which is designed to identify, develop, and elevate young gaming talent across South Africa.

By offering structured competition and national exposure, the platform is helping to create a clear development pathway from grassroots participation to elite-level play—mirroring traditional sporting codes.

April’s victory is a reflection of that growing pipeline, highlighting the increasing depth and competitiveness of youth eSports in the country.

All Eyes on the eDiski Showdown

With the High School division concluded, attention now shifts to the Telkom VS Gaming eDiski tournament, where South Africa’s top players will compete for top honours.

Matches kick off from 10:00am at the CTICC, with April among those stepping up to face seasoned competitors in what promises to be a high-stakes showdown.

A Rising Star in South African eGaming

As the tournament unfolds, Ridhaa April’s journey from school-level standout to national contender encapsulates the broader evolution of eSports in South Africa—an industry gaining momentum, structure, and recognition.

For now, his High School eSports League title marks a significant milestone—but it may well be just the beginning of a much larger story in South African competitive gaming.
