Cape Town, South Africa – 10 May 2026

All eyes will be on the Mother City this Mother’s Day as elite runners and social athletes alike line up for the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K—a race that promises not only electric energy but a share of one of the most lucrative prize purses in South African road running history.

Part of the celebrated Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, the Cape Town leg arrives with heightened anticipation in 2026, boasting a combined series prize purse of R1 686 000. The initiative underscores a growing commitment to rewarding athletic excellence while elevating the profile of road running across the country.

A Race Where Performance Pays

Each event in the five-city series offers a total prize allocation of R337 200, with R267 200 dedicated to the Open Category alone. The stakes are high: winners in both the men’s and women’s elite races will claim R33 000, while second- and third-place finishers earn R24 000 and R21 000, respectively.

But beyond podium finishes, the real excitement lies in the performance-based incentives designed to push athletes beyond conventional limits.

In the men’s elite race, bonuses are triggered for times faster than 28 minutes—with a staggering R300 000 incentive awaiting any athlete who breaks the 27-minute barrier. Similarly, the women’s race offers a R300 000 bonus for finishing under 30:20, with additional rewards for setting new South African records.

Incentivising Excellence Across the Series

The 2026 incentive structure goes even further, rewarding consistency across multiple races. Elite male athletes who break 28 minutes twice during the series will receive a R20 000 bonus, increasing to R30 000 for three sub-28 performances. The same model applies to elite women who consistently run under 32:08.

This layered incentive system reflects a strategic shift—encouraging not just isolated brilliance, but sustained elite performance throughout the season.

More Than a Race

Since its launch in 2015, the series has evolved into a national sporting phenomenon, blending elite competition with mass participation. From Gqeberha to Johannesburg, the five-city tour showcases the diversity and vibrancy of South Africa’s urban landscapes while fostering community engagement through sport.

The 2026 season began in Gqeberha with standout performances from Adriaan Wildschutt, who clocked an impressive 27:47, and Brenda Jepchirchir, who secured victory in 30:15.

Now, the spotlight shifts to Cape Town, where runners will race from Marine Drive in Milnerton to a grand finish in the CBD—set against one of the most scenic backdrops in global road running.

Driving Growth in South African Athletics

Beyond the prize money, the event plays a crucial role in developing local talent and stimulating the broader athletics ecosystem. Dedicated allocations for age categories—including juniors and masters divisions—ensure that excellence is recognised across all levels of competition.

Backed by Absa Group Limited, one of Africa’s leading financial institutions, the series continues to invest in the future of sport by creating opportunities for athletes to compete, earn, and inspire.

The Final Word

As the countdown begins, the message to athletes is clear: this is more than a race—it’s a platform to make history.

With record-breaking incentives, a world-class field, and a city ready to deliver, the 2026 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K is set to be a defining moment in South African road running.

Step up. Stand out. And claim your share.
