MEC Chiloane Expresses Deep Sorrow Following Tragic Scholar Transport Crash That Claimed 12 Young Lives

Vanderbijlpark – Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has expressed profound devastation following a tragic scholar transport accident that claimed the lives of 12 learners on Monday morning, 19 January 2026, in Vanderbijlpark.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 07:00 on Fred Droste Road, when a privately operated scholar transport vehicle collided with a side tipper truck. According to preliminary reports, 11 learners were declared dead at the scene, while a 12th learner later succumbed to injuries in hospital. At least three other learners sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving urgent medical care at nearby health facilities.

The driver of the scholar transport vehicle was also injured and remains hospitalised. At the time of reporting, details regarding the condition of the truck driver had not yet been confirmed.

Leadership Responds to Tragedy

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, accompanied by MEC Chiloane, visited the scene shortly after the incident to assess the situation firsthand, engage with emergency services, and offer support to grieving families and affected school communities.

Describing the incident as one of the most heartbreaking moments for the province, MEC Chiloane conveyed his deep condolences to the families and communities affected.

“It really is a tragic day for us as the Department and the province. We extend our deepest condolences to the learners, families, and school communities affected by this devastating loss,” said Chiloane.

“We are calling for heightened vigilance when it comes to scholar transport, particularly private scholar transport operators, to ensure that the safety of our children is never compromised.”

Investigation Underway

Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that a full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the collision. Police are examining factors such as road conditions, vehicle roadworthiness, and possible human error.

Emergency services, including paramedics and traffic officials, responded swiftly to the scene, while counselling services have been made available to traumatised learners, educators, and families.

Renewed Call for Scholar Transport Safety

The tragedy has once again cast a spotlight on the safety of scholar transport services across Gauteng. The Department of Education has reiterated its call for stricter compliance with transport regulations and improved monitoring of privately operated scholar transport vehicles.

Officials emphasized that the safety of learners remains a top priority and that any form of negligence will be dealt with decisively once investigations are concluded.

Support for Affected Families

The Gauteng Department of Education has committed to providing psychosocial support to families, learners, and school staff affected by the tragedy. Social workers and trauma counsellors have already been deployed to assist communities in coping with the emotional impact of the incident.
