Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, is once again making headlines as it recently showcased its retrofitted Boeing 777 aircraft in South Africa, marking a significant milestone in the region’s aviation landscape. With Cape Town and Johannesburg now serving as the first African destinations to receive the revamped aircraft, Emirates is reinforcing its longstanding commitment to enhancing travel experiences for South African passengers.
Last month, the airline hosted an exclusive guided tour, drawing key stakeholders from South Africa’s aviation and tourism sectors. Notable attendees included Wrenelle Stander, CEO of Wesgro, and Poppy Khoza, Director General of the South African Civil Aviation Authority. The event underscored Emirates’ intent to create partnerships that enrich the travel experience while highlighting the addition of the highly anticipated Premium Economy Class to their fleet—debuting in South Africa.
“As we celebrate three decades of service to South Africa, our commitment to bring the latest and greatest to the market is unwavering,” stated Afzal Parambil, Emirates’ Regional Manager for Southern Africa. He emphasised the airline’s dedication to customer satisfaction, noting the high percentage of repeat passengers, especially for long-haul travel across the globe. The refreshed Boeing 777 is expected to elevate the flying experience. “We look forward to welcoming travellers from South Africa on the refreshed Emirates Boeing 777 soon,” he added.
A closer look at the refurbished Boeing 777
The retrofitted Emirates Boeing 777 features a comprehensive four-class layout, offering upgraded interiors that showcase modern design elements such as tranquil colour palettes, intricate Ghaf Tree motifs, and elegant wood finishes in all cabins. The aircraft boasts a total of 260 state-of-the-art Economy seats, 24 sought-after Premium Economy seats, 38 Business Class seats in a 1-2-1 arrangement, and eight luxurious First Class Suites.
The Economy Class cabin is redesigned with calming ocean blue interiors and high ceilings, providing a spacious and light-filled environment. Comfort remains paramount, with the latest generation seats offering generous legroom.

However, the standout feature of the newly refitted aircraft is undoubtedly the introduction of the Premium Economy cabin to South Africa. This suite of luxury travel is designed to be more accessible, offering an experience that rivals Business Class on many other airlines. Premium Economy includes spacious leather reclining seats fitted with full leg and footrests, adjustable headrests, in-seat charging points, and an array of amenities, including a 13.3-inch TV screen and complimentary amenity kits on select flights.
For those seeking a refined experience, the Business Class cabin has also been revamped, providing privacy and aisle access. Each seat is wrapped in champagne leather—similar to those on the latest Emirates A380—enhancing the aesthetic appeal with detailed stitching and soft cushioned headrests. The First Class Suites are reminiscent of hotel rooms in the sky, maintaining the luxurious standard that Emirates is known for, now enhanced with refreshed interiors.
Emirates’ industry-leading retrofit programme
The refurbishment of the Boeing 777 is part of Emirates’ monumental USD $5 billion retrofit programme launched in November 2022, one of the largest of its kind in the aviation industry. A total of 219 A380s and Boeing 777s are set to be transformed to enhance onboard experiences for passengers, driven entirely by Emirates Engineering. With a dedicated team of over 270 engineers working tirelessly, approximately 1,800 man hours are dedicated daily to ensure the utmost quality in each aircraft. To date, 67 aircraft have been completed, encompassing 32 A380s and 35 Boeing 777s.
By the end of this ambitious project, Emirates plans to install over 8,500 next-generation Premium Economy seats, 2,034 refreshed First-Class suites, 12,720 upgraded Business Class seats with new configurations, and to overhaul 68,364 Economy Class seats.
As the world continues to emerge from the constraints of the pandemic, Emirates’ innovative strides in aviation design and travel comfort hope to usher in a new era of flying—one where South African passengers and international travellers alike can relish unparalleled comfort and luxury on their journeys.
With the unveiling of its retrofitted Boeing 777, Emirates not only cements its position as a leader in the airline industry but also reaffirms its commitment to delivering world-class service to South Africa’s vibrant market.
