FIELD OF DREAMS: STANDARD BANK AND PARTNERS IGNITE A NEW ERA FOR INNER-CITY YOUTH IN JOHANNESBURG

Johannesburg, South Africa – 5 September 2025 – Johannesburg’s Central Business District, once defined by its gold mines and industrial grit, is now set to become home to a different kind of treasure: the boundless potential of South Africa’s young people. On Friday, 5 September, Standard Bank, in partnership with the Maharishi Invincibility Institute (MII), Italtile, and the BW Cares Foundation, officially broke ground on the Field of Dreams – the first-ever full-size soccer field in the CBD.

This landmark initiative is more than just a sporting facility. It is a bold reimagining of Johannesburg’s future – a space where education, sport, and community regeneration intersect to empower the next generation.

Mining for a Different Kind of Gold

Johannesburg has long carried the legacy of being “Egoli” – the City of Gold. Its early identity was shaped by extraction, labour, and the pursuit of mineral wealth. But the Field of Dreams project signals a shift from digging beneath the earth to cultivating what lies above: the genius, resilience, and creativity of the city’s youth.

“The Field of Dreams represents our deep commitment to the regeneration of Johannesburg and our belief in the power of public-private collaboration,” said Nkosinathi Manzana, Executive Head: Group Real Estate at Standard Bank. “We are proud to partner with the Maharishi Invincibility Institute, an organisation with a remarkable history of transforming lives. This field is a tangible investment in the health, well-being, and future success of the next generation of leaders.”

By offering land and initial funding, Standard Bank has not only reallocated a piece of prime inner-city real estate but also redefined it as a social commons – a space that restores pride, safety, and opportunity to a city centre often associated with urban decay.

A Legacy of Transformation

At the heart of this initiative stands the Maharishi Invincibility Institute (MII), an organisation with a track record that speaks to the transformative power of education and human development.

With 25,595 formerly unemployed youth trained and placed into high-quality jobs, MII has already demonstrated that investing in people pays dividends far greater than any commodity. Its graduates, now thriving in sectors such as finance, technology, banking, and management consulting, are collectively projected to earn R82.9 billion over their lifetimes. The institute has also earned 35 local and international awards for innovation and impact, solidifying its reputation as a global leader in inclusive education.

For Dr. Taddy Blecher, CEO of MII, the Field of Dreams is both symbolic and practical:

“This is more than just grass; it’s a promise to our youth. For decades, this city has been known for its gold reserves and the birthplace of South African industry. Today, we are digging deep for something more valuable—the genius, creativity, and infinite potential within the city’s youth. The Field of Dreams will be a place where they build confidence, learn teamwork, and see that their futures are boundless.”

The Vision of JoziMyJozi

The project has been co-ordinated under the umbrella of JoziMyJozi, a multi-stakeholder coalition dedicated to reimagining the CBD as a vibrant, inclusive hub of innovation, culture, and opportunity. Driven by legendary cricketer Dr. Ali Bacher, JoziMyJozi reflects the spirit of collective action – where corporate leaders, NGOs, and civic visionaries collaborate to tackle urban challenges.

“This is that one place in the city where any young person with a dream can come and study for up to 10 hours per day, with all tuition, books, materials, technology, sports, and much more for a maximum of R200 per month,” said Dr. Bacher. “This is why we called it the Field of Dreams.”

Symbolism in Sight

Location matters. Situated at a landmark site visible to over 900,000 cars passing daily on the M1 highway, the Field of Dreams is designed to be more than a hidden resource; it is a public statement of renewal. Its green expanse will not only serve as a space for soccer but as a gateway to MII’s “Education Town” campus, where thousands of township youth already access world-class education daily.

The field’s very visibility is part of its power. As one of the most prominent green spaces in the city, it stands as a symbol of hope, progress, and inclusivity, reminding both residents and visitors that Johannesburg is a city not defined by its challenges but by its capacity for reinvention.

Beyond Sport: Education, Community, and Nation-Building

The Field of Dreams transcends traditional notions of sports development. It is not about producing elite athletes alone, though that may be one outcome. Instead, it emphasises the holistic development of youth – confidence, discipline, teamwork, and pride. By linking sport to MII’s broader ecosystem of education, vocational training, and personal growth, the initiative embodies the idea that sport is not peripheral but central to nation-building.

This approach aligns with global academic discourse on youth development, where sports facilities in underserved communities are increasingly recognised as vehicles for social cohesion, crime prevention, and civic identity.

A Call for Collaboration

The Field of Dreams is a multi-stakeholder success story:

  • Standard Bank provided land and initial funding, affirming its role as both financier and community partner.
  • Italtile and the BW Cares Foundation contributed resources and expertise, alongside an anonymous donor whose generosity ensured the project’s feasibility.
  • JoziMyJozi provided the vision and coordination to turn disparate efforts into a unified strategy for urban renewal.

Together, they have demonstrated that collaboration across sectors is not just possible but essential in addressing the structural inequalities of South African society.

Conclusion: A Dream Made Real

The groundbreaking of the Field of Dreams marks more than the start of construction; it is the start of a new narrative for Johannesburg’s inner city. It is a recognition that the future of South Africa will not be mined from the earth but cultivated in its people.

As cars pass daily on the M1, drivers will see more than a field; they will see a promise – a living reminder that Johannesburg is still a city of dreams, and that through collective action, those dreams can become reality.

For the youth who will lace up their boots, step onto the grass, and chase the ball, the Field of Dreams is not just a playground. It is a platform. A place to imagine, to belong, and to believe.
