Athol Fugard’s Master Harold and the Boys, directed by Warona Seane Starring, award-, Sello Maake Ka-Ncube, Daniel Anderson and Lebohang Motaung returns to SA theatre stage for a limited run.
In this critically acclaimed theatre piece by Athol Fugard, Sello Maake KaNcube, Daniel Anderson and Lebohang Motaung Lighting and Set Design: Wilhelm Disbergen take theatre lovers back in time in celebration of the work of one of SA’s leading and celebrated playwright after his most recent passing with a new production of the much-loved Master Harold…and the Boys.
The play which takes place in South Africa during apartheid in 1950 depicts how institutionalised racism, bigotry or hatred can become absorbed by those who live under it. It is said to be a semi-autobiographical play.
This masterpiece set in the golden era of the 1950s premiers on June 11 and runs until June 28 at Sandton’s Theatre on the Square.
Presented shortly after Fugard’s passing, this staging is both a cultural homage and a timely reflection on the social tensions still present in modern-day South Africa. Set in a 1950stearoom during apartheid, the play explores the emotional complexity between a white teenager and two Black waiters, uncovering the subtle, often unspoken ways racism infiltrates everyday relationships.
Fugard’s masterpiece exposes how racism poisons even the closest bonds. In today’s South Africa, where political tensions rise and social divisions deepen, this revival asks a critical question: How far have we really come?Returning to the venue after critically acclaimed performances in The Suit and The House of Truth, veteran actor Sello Maake KaNcube brings layered depth to the role of Sam. He is joined by Lebohang Motaung and Daniel Anderson, whose compelling performances complete a tightly woven, emotionally charged trio. Together under Seana’s skilled direction, they deliver a work of art that resonates far beyond the stage.
