Trailblazing South African musician Moonchild Sanelly is finally bringing her globally celebrated album Full Moon home to Johannesburg with a special live performance that promises to be one of the city’s standout music events of the year.
Titled “FULL MOON – Return to Jozi”, the highly anticipated show marks the first time the artist will perform the album live in her hometown after touring internationally with acclaimed tracks including Scrambled Eggs, Do My Dance, and Falling.
The announcement comes shortly after Moonchild Sanelly’s headline-grabbing appearance supporting Doja Cat in Pretoria — a performance that reignited her desire to reconnect with South African audiences through an intimate and intentionally affordable Johannesburg experience.
According to the singer, bringing the Full Moon era back to Johannesburg carries deep personal meaning.
“In my writing, I pay homage to the many years that I struggled, because that shaped me. I have toured the world with Full Moon, and bringing this show home to Johannesburg is everything to me,” she said.
“To share my alternative sound with my original Jozi crowd means the absolute world… In fact, it means the Moon!”
From Durban and Jozi to global stages
Known for her fearless individuality, electrifying performances, and genre-bending sound she famously describes as “future-ghetto-funk,” Moonchild Sanelly has become one of Africa’s most influential alternative artists.
Her rise began in Durban and Johannesburg’s underground creative scenes before exploding into mainstream recognition through hits such as I Walk Ye Phara, Midnight Starring, and Makhe, alongside her award-winning debut album Rabulapha!.
Since then, her career has evolved into a global success story marked by high-profile collaborations with some of the world’s biggest artists, including Beyoncé on My Power, Gorillaz, Wizkid, Major Lazer, Diplo and Damon Albarn through the Africa Express project.
Signed to Transgressive Records in the United Kingdom, she has since released critically acclaimed projects including Phases and Full Moon, with Full Moon receiving recognition from publications such as Variety and GQ as one of the year’s standout albums.
A deeply personal and unapologetic body of work
Full Moon is widely regarded as Moonchild Sanelly’s most vulnerable and expansive project to date — a genre-defying album blending Amapiano, Gqom, edgy pop, afro-punk, kwaito, hip-hop, and electronic influences into a bold autobiographical narrative.
Produced by Swedish hitmaker Johan Hugo, the album explores themes of liberation, healing, sexuality, motherhood, self-love, heartbreak, and survival.
Standout tracks such as Big Booty, Sweet & Savage, Boom, and Scrambled Eggs showcase her fearless lyricism and rebellious energy, while songs like Falling and Mntanami reveal emotional depth and vulnerability rarely explored in mainstream dance music.
“My music is about the body and liberation,” Moonchild explains. “No one can make it OK for you to feel like you don’t love yourself.”
International acclaim without compromise
What continues to distinguish Moonchild Sanelly is her ability to achieve global recognition without compromising her identity or alternative artistry.
From and to a record-breaking series of performances at , her live performances have become renowned for their explosive energy, visual boldness, and emotional intensity.
British publication The Times described her performances as “visual swagger and anthems infectious enough to fill arenas.”
Her fearless self-expression, outspoken personality, and refusal to dilute her creative voice have also made her an important cultural figure for a new generation of African artists challenging conventional boundaries in music and identity.
A powerful return to home soil
For fans in Johannesburg, “FULL MOON – Return to Jozi” represents more than a concert — it is a homecoming celebration for one of South Africa’s most daring and globally respected musical exports.
Supported by the SAMPRA Development Fund, the show is expected to bring together Moonchild’s original supporters alongside newer audiences who have discovered her through her international rise.
