With momentum firmly on his side, South African road-running sensation George Kusche is preparing for another major test when he lines up at the prestigious Totalsports Two Oceans Half Marathon in Cape Town on Sunday, 12 April 2026.
Despite entering the race as one of the leading contenders, Kusche remains characteristically grounded, choosing to focus on preparation and process rather than predictions. The 27-year-old Nedbank Running Club athlete has enjoyed an exceptional run of form over the past year, steadily building a reputation as one of South Africa’s most formidable distance runners.
Kusche’s recent performances underline his upward trajectory. In November 2025, he delivered a remarkable performance at the African Bank Soweto Marathon, finishing fourth in an impressive time of 2:20:48. He followed that effort with a commanding victory at the Biogen 21K in January, conquering the demanding course in 1:05:32 and setting a new course record.
His dominance continued in February at the Balwin Run Series Peninsula Marathon, where Kusche shattered his personal best by more than five minutes, storming to victory in 2:15:02.
“I’ve been slowly getting better,” Kusche explained. “I haven’t really changed anything in my training. I’ve just been consistent, and over time that consistency starts to compound. I’m definitely feeling stronger.”
A Journey Years in the Making
Kusche’s rise in long-distance running can be traced back to his school days at Die Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool in Pretoria, where he first emerged as a dominant middle-distance athlete.
His performances soon attracted international attention, earning him a scholarship to Northern Arizona University in the United States. Competing on the highly competitive NCAA circuit, Kusche developed into a world-class middle-distance runner, eventually returning to South Africa as a sub-four-minute miler and the holder of a formidable 13:28.95 personal best in the 5000 metres.
Reflecting on his time in the United States, Kusche credits the experience with shaping both his athletic career and his approach to training.
“I’m very grateful for my experience in the US,” he said. “I learned a lot working with great coaches and athletes. I’m coaching myself now, so I often look back at the training I did there and try to recreate those conditions.”

Road Running Success
After briefly stepping away from competitive racing in 2023, Kusche returned to competition in 2024—this time focusing on road running. The transition proved almost immediately successful.
His debut at the Totalsports Two Oceans Half Marathon in 2024 delivered a memorable performance. Just a week after setting a personal best of 28:56 at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K, Kusche surged to the front of the Two Oceans race and led until the halfway mark before being overtaken by eventual winner Thabang Mosiako. He ultimately secured second place in 1:05:31, narrowly edging Kamohelo Mofolo at the finish.
The experience left a lasting impression on the Pretoria-born runner.
“I wasn’t always a big fan of road racing because I hadn’t done much of it before,” he admitted. “But as I’ve started doing more of it, I’m really enjoying it. Two Oceans is one of those races everyone wants to run. It’s special because so many people participate, and the atmosphere is incredible.”
Eyes on the Bigger Goal
While the Two Oceans Half Marathon remains a key race on his calendar, Kusche has a broader objective for the season—preparing for the iconic Comrades Marathon.
Nevertheless, his presence in the Two Oceans field will undoubtedly add depth and excitement to the competition.
“George Kusche’s entry adds real depth to this year’s field,” said Chris Goldschmidt, Chairperson of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC. “His performances over the past 12 months have been exceptional, and we’re excited to see him compete on one of the world’s most iconic road-running stages.”
Wade Bromfield, General Manager of the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon, echoed the sentiment, highlighting Kusche’s recent victories and growing stature in the sport.
“George has firmly established himself as one of South Africa’s standout road runners. His recent results show the kind of potential he has, and we’re thrilled to have him back at the Two Oceans Half Marathon.”
Focused on the Process
Despite the growing expectations surrounding him, Kusche remains focused on the fundamentals.
“I want to do my best at Comrades,” he said. “But there’s no point in talking about outcomes. I focus on the process. When you start thinking too much about results, things can go wrong. So I keep working hard and staying disciplined.”
With a rapidly improving record and a measured mindset, Kusche is set to be one of the athletes to watch when the Totalsports Two Oceans Half Marathon unfolds in Cape Town next month.
And if his current form is anything to go by, the rising South African star could once again deliver a performance worthy of the race’s reputation as the World’s Most Beautiful Half Marathon.
