The Gauteng Department of e-Government, led by Head of Department Ms Masabata Mutlaneng, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, under the stewardship of Acting Head Mr Roche Mogorosi, welcomed a high-level delegation from the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government for a strategic engagement on digital innovation in public safety.
The delegation, headed by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli, was hosted at the Gauteng Provincial Command Centre for a comprehensive knowledge-exchange session centred on technology-driven crime prevention and intergovernmental collaboration.
A Partnership for Safer Communities
opportunities that could enhance service delivery in areas such as community safety, digital infrastructure, and technology integration.
Premier Ntuli and his team toured Gauteng’s advanced e-Policing systems, experiencing first-hand the province’s flagship innovations:
- The Gauteng e-Panic Button – a mobile app that enables residents to instantly alert emergency services during crises.
- The CCTV Surveillance Network – a province-wide system designed to deter crime, enhance visibility, and strengthen proactive policing.
“These technologies are not just tools but form part of a broader digital transformation strategy within the Gauteng Provincial Government,” Ms Mutlaneng explained.

Shifting from Reactive to Preventative Policing
Ms Mutlaneng underscored the importance of creating safer environments through both innovation and visibility.
“As e-Gov, our role is to modernise government services through automation and innovation. Our work directly supports departments like Community Safety in building smarter, more responsive environments,” she said.
She further noted the psychological impact of visible technology:
“When a Gauteng resident sees CCTV infrastructure or knows they have a panic button at their fingertips, that sense of being watched over becomes a deterrent to crime in itself.”
Tackling Cybercrime Head-On
Beyond physical safety innovations, the Gauteng Department of e-Government showcased its Cybersecurity Command Centre, located at its headquarters.
The centre continuously monitors and neutralises threats, with a special focus on phishing attacks and potential breaches of government systems.
“We’ve seen some alarming trends in cyber-attacks, but the proactive systems we’ve put in place have significantly bolstered our resilience and enabled a much more preventative stance,” said Ms Mutlaneng.
Commitment to Ongoing Collaboration
The visit concluded with both provinces affirming their intent to strengthen ties, share expertise, and continue harnessing technology as a driver of safety and service delivery.
In a joint statement, the delegations highlighted the importance of interprovincial cooperation in building safer, digitally empowered communities across South Africa.
Premier Ntuli expressed optimism about the partnership, praising Gauteng’s pioneering approach to e-Policing as a blueprint for innovation in KwaZulu-Natal
