EAST LONDON, 2 OCTOBER 2026 — Learners and educators at Ebenezer Majombozi High School in Gompo Town, Duncan Village, East London, are set to benefit from a more reliable learning environment following the handover of a new 15kW portable Solar PV container by Engen.

The installation forms part of Engen’s corporate social investment (CSI) programme focused on education and renewable energy, delivered in collaboration with the company’s retail and dealer partners and the Department of Education.

The initiative is designed to help schools mitigate the impact of electricity disruptions on teaching and learning while providing learners with practical exposure to renewable energy technologies.

For Ebenezer Majombozi High School, the solar installation is particularly significant as the school continues to strengthen its focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Powering opportunity beyond the classroom

The portable solar solution provides the school with a reliable source of electricity during power outages, helping to minimise interruptions to lessons and other school activities.

It will also enable greater access to the school’s science laboratory for after-school learning, enrichment programmes and other educational activities.

Engen CSI Manager Olwethu Mdabula said the investment reflects the company’s commitment to education while demonstrating how renewable energy can contribute to more resilient communities.

“Today we are proud to hand over this solar installation as part of our CSI commitment to investing in education and introducing renewable energy solutions into our schools,” said Mdabula.

“We are hopeful that this investment will go a long way towards supporting the school’s strong STEM focus and inspiring even more learners to pursue opportunities in science, technology and innovation.”

Mdabula said the project had been made possible through collaboration between Engen, its retail and dealer partners and the Department of Education.

“It is our small investment in ensuring that as a business, when we rise, so do our communities, by investing in the future of our learners and our country,” he said.

A practical lesson in renewable energy

The installation goes beyond keeping the lights on. It gives learners an opportunity to see renewable energy in action and understand how sustainable technologies can be applied to address challenges in their own communities.

School principal Mr V.L. Pakade welcomed the installation, describing reliable electricity as an important component of an effective learning environment.

“The solar installation is an important investment in our school and will make a meaningful difference to our learners and educators,” said Pakade.

“Reliable electricity is essential for creating an environment where teaching and learning can continue without unnecessary disruption. It also gives our learners the opportunity to see the practical value of renewable energy and understand how sustainable solutions can contribute to their communities.”

The installation is also expected to help reduce electricity costs, potentially allowing the school to redirect resources towards other educational priorities.

Learners see investment in their future

For the school’s Grade 12 top learner, Moluka Angeline Peteni, the solar installation represents more than an infrastructure upgrade — it is an investment in the future of the learners themselves.

“On behalf of the learners of Ebenezer Majombozi High School, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Engen for such an impactful donation,” said Peteni.

“Thank you for choosing our school and choosing to invest in our futures.”

Peteni said the project had made sustainability tangible for learners.

“Sustainability and contributing positively to the environment is not only something we learn about in our textbooks; it is something we can now see and experience in our own school,” she said.

She added that reliable power during outages would allow learners to continue with their studies without unnecessary disruption.

Building more resilient schools

Engen’s investment aligns with the company’s broader focus on education, sustainable development and renewable energy, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.

The Ebenezer Majombozi installation forms part of Engen’s wider investment in solar solutions for schools. Over the past year, Solar PV containers have been installed at six beneficiary schools across KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

By bringing renewable energy directly into the school environment, the initiative creates both an immediate practical benefit and a learning opportunity — allowing young people to experience the technology that could play an increasingly important role in South Africa’s energy future.

For Ebenezer Majombozi High School, the solar installation therefore represents more than an alternative source of power. It is an investment in uninterrupted learning, practical STEM education and the potential of a generation being prepared to navigate a rapidly changing world.

When education is powered by opportunity, the future has a brighter chance to shine.
