29 September 2026 | Johannesburg — A new chapter in education is taking shape in Johannesburg’s Milpark, with SPARK Milpark Primary set to open its doors in January 2027, offering families a new schooling option focused on personalised learning, academic development and character formation.

The new school will welcome learners from Grade R to Grade 5 in its first year, with enrolment already under way. As the school community grows, additional grades will be introduced progressively, with the campus ultimately designed to accommodate 996 learners and develop into a full primary and secondary offering.

At the heart of SPARK Schools’ educational approach is the belief that learners do not progress in identical ways simply because they are in the same grade. Instead, the organisation uses assessment data, technology and educator expertise to understand individual learning needs and tailor instruction accordingly.

Putting personalised learning into practice

For SPARK Schools, personalised learning goes beyond simply identifying learners who require additional support. The approach is intended to become part of everyday classroom practice, allowing educators to respond to the different levels, learning needs and capabilities within their classrooms.

“Personalised learning is about meeting scholars where they are and using what we know about them to guide them forward,” says Khomotjo Mashele, Head of Product at SPARK Schools.

“For some, this may mean targeted support to close a gap, while others may need a greater challenge. The goal is to make learning appropriately progressive for each scholar.”

This model enables educators to use information gathered through assessment and classroom observation to determine what learners understand, where misconceptions may exist and what should happen next in their learning journey.

Rather than positioning personalised learning as an intervention only for learners experiencing difficulties, SPARK Schools aims to embed it into the rhythm of teaching and learning.

Empowering educators

The approach also places significant emphasis on the role of teachers.

Earl Sampson, Chief Executive Officer of SPARK Schools, says effective personalised learning depends on educators having the instructional expertise and confidence to respond to the individual learners in front of them.

“When teachers have strong instructional practice and the ability to reflect on what is happening in their classrooms, they are better equipped to make personalised learning meaningful for each scholar,” says Sampson.

The philosophy recognises that technology and data can provide valuable insights, but that those insights still require professional judgement. Educators must be able to interpret learner information, identify misconceptions, adapt instruction and make informed decisions about the next stage of a learner’s development.

Beyond academics

SPARK Milpark Primary will also incorporate Character Quotient (CQ) into its educational approach, with an emphasis on qualities such as resilience, empathy and leadership.

The programme is designed to complement academic development by helping learners cultivate personal attributes that can support them throughout their schooling and beyond matric.

This broader focus reflects an educational environment where achievement is considered alongside the development of learners as individuals, with an emphasis on preparing them for the challenges and opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.

Connecting with the Milpark community

As the January 2027 opening approaches, SPARK Schools is placing emphasis on engagement with prospective families and the wider Milpark community.

Open days, school visits and community engagement initiatives will provide families with opportunities to meet the school’s team, explore the environment and gain a practical understanding of how the SPARK Schools model operates.

For prospective parents, these engagements offer an opportunity to look beyond the educational philosophy and see how personalised learning, technology, assessment and educator expertise come together in the daily classroom experience.

With its phased expansion from Grades R to 5 and plans to grow towards a 996-learner campus offering both primary and secondary education, SPARK Milpark Primary represents a significant addition to Johannesburg’s evolving education landscape.

As the school prepares to welcome its first learners in January, its focus will be on building a community where academic progress, individual attention and character development form part of the everyday learning experience.
