JOHANNESBURG — As South Africa marks Transport Month, Engen is once again putting the health and wellbeing of the country’s truck drivers firmly in the spotlight, launching its annual Driver Wellness campaign to provide free voluntary health screenings to the people who keep the nation’s economy moving.
The 2026 campaign kicks off on 19 October, with professional health and wellness services being brought directly to truck drivers at 28 Engen Truck Stops and selected Engen 1-Stops nationwide.
The initiative, which runs through October and into November, is being delivered in partnership with Trucking Wellness, an initiative of the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI).
Keeping South Africa moving
Truck drivers spend long hours on the country’s roads, often travelling significant distances and spending extended periods away from their families.
For Engen, supporting their wellbeing is therefore closely connected to road safety, the sustainability of the transport industry and the continued movement of goods across South Africa.
“Truck drivers are the unsung heroes of our highways,” said Anashya Soobhar, Marketing Manager for Engen Commercial.
“Their long hours and demanding schedules make campaigns like this essential for their well-being and for road safety. With 90% of South Africa’s goods transported by road, Engen is proud to play a role in keeping both drivers and the economy moving.”
The scale of the road-freight sector means that the health of drivers has implications well beyond the individual, with their wellbeing forming part of the broader ecosystem that keeps supply chains operating.

Taking healthcare to the road
The Driver Wellness campaign is designed to make essential health checks more accessible by bringing services directly to locations where truck drivers stop to refuel, rest and continue their journeys.
Participating drivers will have access to a comprehensive range of voluntary screenings, including checks for:
- Blood pressure
- Cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Malaria
- Tuberculosis (TB)
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- HIV/AIDS
- Body Mass Index (BMI)
Each participating driver will also receive a complimentary tog bag from Engen as a gesture of appreciation.
The campaign builds on the reach achieved during last year’s Transport Month initiative, when more than 1,500 screenings were conducted across Engen Truck Stops and selected Engen 1-Stops in eight provinces.
Early detection can make a difference
For drivers who spend much of their working lives on the road, accessing routine healthcare can present practical challenges.
Tertius Wessels, Project Manager for Trucking Wellness, said providing services at truck stops helps address that challenge while encouraging drivers to take greater ownership of their health.
“Truck drivers often spend long periods away from home and face unique health challenges. By bringing wellness services directly to where they work and rest, we can ensure early detection, promote healthier lifestyles, and help keep South Africa’s roads safer,” Wessels said.
The approach allows drivers to receive health information and screening without having to make a separate journey to access basic wellness services.

Support that goes beyond Transport Month
Engen’s commitment to driver wellness extends beyond the annual campaign.
Truck drivers can access professional medical services throughout the year at six permanent Trucking Wellness clinics situated at strategic Engen sites around the country.
These include:
- Beaufort West Truck Stop — Western Cape
- Winelands 1 Stop North — Western Cape
- Musina Gateway Truck Stop — Limpopo
- PE Gone South Truck Stop — Eastern Cape
- Harrismith Highway Junction Truck Stop — KwaZulu-Natal
- Kokstad Truck Stop — KwaZulu-Natal
Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager, said the company’s relationship with the transport sector stretches back decades.
“Engen’s relationship with the transport sector spans multiple decades. We recognise its crucial role in driving South Africa’s economy and are proud to continue supporting the men and women who keep our country supplied and connected,” Mdabula said.

A healthier road ahead
The Driver Wellness campaign highlights an important reality of South Africa’s transport economy: behind every delivery, supply chain and journey are people whose health and safety matter.
By taking healthcare services directly to truck stops, Engen and Trucking Wellness are helping make preventative health support more accessible to drivers while encouraging early detection and healthier lifestyles.
As Transport Month gets underway, the message is clear: the people who keep South Africa moving also deserve support to stay healthy, safe and well.
