EVATON, GAUTENG — 21 September 2026 — The Vaal’s rich football heritage is set for a fresh chapter this Heritage Day as the inaugural Kurra Cup brings grassroots football, community pride and youth development to Evaton.
Taking place on Thursday, 24 September 2026, at the Conti Ground in Evaton, the tournament is expected to transform the historic community football grounds into a celebration of sport, culture and township life.
More than a football tournament, the Kurra Cup has been positioned as a community-driven initiative aimed at using the game as a vehicle for unity, youth empowerment and social connection across the Sedibeng district.
Football as a force for unity
The tournament draws inspiration from historic grassroots sporting initiatives, including the 1992 Philly’s Games in Tembisa, which became associated with efforts to bring communities together through football during a period of deep social and political division.
Organisers believe the same unifying power of football remains relevant today, particularly in communities where local pitches serve as important gathering places for young people, families and aspiring athletes.
Grassroots football also contributes to the township economy, creating opportunities for local vendors and small businesses while providing young players with a platform to showcase their abilities.
The Kurra Cup seeks to build on this tradition by creating an environment where emerging football talent can compete while the wider community comes together to celebrate Heritage Day.
Tshabalala to inspire the next generation

Clare Louise du Sart, spokesperson for the tournament organisers, said the initiative was about recognising both the footballing talent and resilience of communities in the Vaal.
“Football remains a central pillar of community life in the Vaal Triangle, and this Heritage Day initiative is about recognising the raw talent and the unyielding spirit of its residents,” said du Sart.
She said the organisers hoped the tournament would evolve into a lasting platform for youth development and community engagement.
“The objective is to establish a lasting platform where our youth can actively thrive, where families can gather in celebration, and where the rich sporting legacy of the Vaal is proudly carried into the future.”
The Kurra Cup also comes at a time when grassroots sporting facilities remain important spaces for developing young talent and strengthening community networks.

The tournament will run from 09:00 to 18:00, with the first matches scheduled to kick off at 10:00.
Alongside a packed programme of football, the day will feature local entertainment, food and community activities, creating a festival atmosphere around the sporting action.
