JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – More than two decades of championing youth development and creating life-changing opportunities for young South Africans have earned Martin Sweet, Group Chief Executive Officer of Prime Impact Holdings, one of the country’s highest honours in corporate social investment.

Sweet has been named Best CEO at the prestigious CSI Legacy Awards, recognising his outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to tackling South Africa’s education and youth development challenges through innovative, sustainable programmes.

The accolade celebrates a remarkable 21-year journey that has seen Sweet transform a bold vision into one of South Africa’s most influential youth empowerment ecosystems, positively impacting more than 1.7 million learners while reaching over 90,000 young people annually.

A Vision Built on Opportunity

For Sweet, youth empowerment has never been confined to the traditional boundaries of corporate social investment.

Instead, it has centred on creating pathways that connect ambition with opportunity, ensuring that young South Africans are equipped not only to dream but to achieve.

“Creating opportunities that empower South Africa’s young people has always been about building bridges between possibility and opportunity,” Sweet said.

That philosophy has guided his leadership since 2004, when Primestars—then known as Marketing Stars—was established with a small team determined to address the country’s education and skills challenges in innovative ways.

Reflecting on those early years, Sweet recalls that success depended on understanding the realities facing young people before designing solutions.

“South Africa’s youngsters deserved more than hope. They deserved access, opportunity and a bridge between where they were and where they aspired to go.”

Turning Cinemas into Classrooms

One of Primestars’ defining innovations was the transformation of Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro cinemas into what Sweet describes as “theatres of learning.”

By repurposing entertainment venues into educational spaces, Primestars launched EduCate, a groundbreaking national matric revision programme that continues to provide free academic support to thousands of learners across South Africa.

The initiative has become one of the country’s most recognised education interventions, with the 2026 EduCate programme launching this week.

The success of EduCate demonstrated that education could be delivered in engaging and accessible ways while reaching learners beyond traditional classroom environments.

Beyond Education

While academic support formed the foundation of Primestars’ work, the organisation has evolved into a comprehensive youth development platform focused on preparing young people for life beyond school.

Its programmes now cover career guidance, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, leadership development and social awareness, equipping participants with practical skills needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive economy.

Sweet believes empowering young people means helping them discover possibilities they may never have considered.

“We helped young people explore careers they didn’t know existed. We encouraged them to step into entrepreneurship, to see themselves as creators of jobs rather than seekers of them.”

He added that the organisation has also focused on challenging harmful stereotypes, promoting gender equality, strengthening leadership skills and teaching financial literacy in ways that resonate with young people.

A New Era for Prime Impact Holdings

The CSI Legacy Award comes during a significant period of growth for Sweet, who recently assumed the role of Group CEO of Prime Impact Holdings.

The newly established group brings together several purpose-driven organisations, including:

  • Primestars
  • Signa
  • Seed Academy
  • School Media
  • InternFit

Together, these organisations form an integrated ecosystem designed to support young people from education through employment and entrepreneurship.

Described as a “Learning to Earning” model, the structure enables corporate partners to invest strategically in youth development while delivering measurable social and economic impact.

The integrated approach also creates stronger connections between education, workplace readiness, enterprise development and employment opportunities.

Strong Partnerships Driving National Impact

Throughout his leadership journey, Sweet has built enduring partnerships with both government and the private sector.

Long-standing collaborators include the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Higher Education and Training, while major corporate supporters have included Liberty, Standard Bank, Cell C, First National Bank (FNB), Anglo American, Seriti, and AECI.

These partnerships have enabled programmes to expand nationally while responding to South Africa’s evolving educational and economic needs.

Investing in South Africa’s Greatest Asset

Despite receiving national recognition, Sweet insists the award belongs to the many educators, partners, facilitators and supporters who have contributed to changing millions of young lives.

At the heart of his leadership philosophy is an unwavering belief in the limitless potential of South Africa’s youth.

“The youth of this country are not broken. They are brilliant. They simply need scaffolding, encouragement and environments that allow their gifts to rise.”

His words reflect a broader vision that sees young people not as beneficiaries of charity, but as future innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders capable of driving South Africa’s long-term prosperity.

Recognition of Lasting Impact

The CSI Legacy Award not only acknowledges Martin Sweet’s personal contribution to youth development but also recognises the enduring impact of organisations that have consistently invested in education, skills development and economic inclusion.

As Prime Impact Holdings embarks on its next chapter, Sweet’s leadership will continue shaping programmes that bridge the gap between learning and meaningful employment, helping thousands more young South Africans unlock their potential.

In a country where youth unemployment and unequal access to opportunity remain among the most pressing challenges, Sweet’s work stands as a powerful reminder that sustainable investment in education and empowerment can transform individual lives while contributing to national development.

His latest accolade is not merely recognition of a distinguished career—it is a testament to more than two decades of building futures, creating opportunities, and inspiring a generation to believe that their ambitions are within reach.
