JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg’s inner city is preparing to come alive once again as Main Street Sundays returns on Sunday, 9 August 2026, transforming the historic streets of Marshalltown into a vibrant, car-free cultural playground in celebration of National Women’s Day.
Following the overwhelming success of its inaugural edition in April, which attracted more than 5,000 visitors, the initiative returns with an even bigger programme designed to celebrate community, creativity, wellness and the remarkable women who continue to shape Johannesburg’s story. Hosted by Jozi My Jozi in partnership with Young Urbanists, the City of Johannesburg, Proudly South African, and the Gautrain, the free public event invites residents and visitors to rediscover the city on foot while enjoying a unique blend of art, music, food, wellness and family-friendly activities.

Reimagining Johannesburg’s Streets
Fresh from the success of the 702 Jozi My Jozi Walk the Talk, which recently saw over 25,000 people reclaim Johannesburg’s streets, Main Street Sundays continues the growing movement to create more people-centred public spaces.
For one day, the busy Main Street corridor will belong entirely to pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders, roller-skaters, families with prams and wheelchair users, replacing traffic congestion with creativity, conversation and celebration.
According to Dawn Robertson, Visitor and Creative Economy Catalyst at Jozi My Jozi, the event is about much more than entertainment.
“We invite everyone to come out and experience the inner city as a car-free zone for the day. It is a space where people can slow down, reconnect with one another and experience Johannesburg differently.”
Unlike traditional festivals, Main Street Sundays is intentionally non-commercial, encouraging visitors to explore at their own pace rather than rushing between scheduled performances.
“It’s essentially about human connection,” Robertson explains. “It’s an opportunity to meet Johannesburg in a more relaxed and appreciative way.”

Celebrating Women Through Community
This year’s Women’s Day edition places a special spotlight on celebrating Johannesburg’s mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers and female community leaders.
Families are encouraged to spend the day together exploring the city, enjoying public spaces and celebrating the women who contribute to the vibrancy and resilience of Johannesburg every day.
The event demonstrates how inclusive public spaces can foster stronger communities while creating opportunities for meaningful social interaction.
Art, Wellness and Creativity Take Centre Stage
Visitors will encounter several themed zones carefully curated to appeal to all ages and interests.
Outside 44 Main, a tranquil Zen and Wellness Zone will offer yoga sessions, urban sketching, silent book clubs and mindful relaxation beneath the area’s iconic trees and fountains.
Children can enjoy interactive educational experiences in the dedicated Kids’ Zone, hosted by Play Africa, featuring creative workshops, imaginative play areas and even a mock courtroom designed to make learning fun.
Art lovers will have plenty to explore along the Walkable Art Mile, including exhibitions at the Standard Bank Gallery, rooftop installations by Asisebenze Gallery, and creative displays celebrating Johannesburg’s dynamic artistic community.
Meanwhile, local designers, artisans and entrepreneurs will showcase handcrafted products and unique creations at the bustling Creative Makers’ Market, supporting small businesses while highlighting local talent.

Food, Music and Local Flavour
Food lovers will be spoiled for choice as Gandhi Square transforms into a lively culinary hub featuring food trucks, local restaurants and diverse cuisines reflecting Johannesburg’s multicultural identity.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the new Vintage & Vinyl Market promises nostalgic treasures for collectors, while live musicians provide a soundtrack celebrating the city’s rich musical heritage.
Whether visitors arrive to enjoy street food, discover local fashion, browse handmade crafts or simply soak up the atmosphere, the event promises something for everyone.
Building a Better Johannesburg
For Roland Postma, Managing Director of Young Urbanists, Main Street Sundays represents a broader vision for Johannesburg’s future.
“If we want Johannesburg to work, we must start with its streets. Once you change the street, you change the city—and ultimately, you change the country.”
Robertson agrees, describing the initiative as an opportunity to restore Johannesburg’s sense of belonging.
“When we close the streets to cars and open them to people, we remind everyone that this city belongs to them. We want every visitor to remember why they fell in love with Johannesburg in the first place.”
A New Vision for Urban Living
With enhanced safety measures provided by Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers, trained marshals, volunteers and emergency services, organisers hope visitors will feel comfortable exploring the inner city with confidence.
Accessible transport options—including Gautrain shuttle services, nearby secure parking facilities and City Sightseeing buses—make attending easy for families and visitors from across Gauteng.
As Johannesburg continues to embrace innovative urban experiences that prioritise people over traffic, Main Street Sundays has quickly become more than a monthly event—it is evolving into a movement that reimagines how residents experience their city.
This National Women’s Day, the streets of Johannesburg will once again belong to its people, offering a vibrant celebration of creativity, culture, diversity and community while showcasing the transformative power of public spaces when they are designed for connection rather than congestion.
