TSHWANE – The University of Pretoria’s renowned high-performance sports programme, TuksSport, is preparing to send a formidable contingent of student-athletes to the 2026 University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championships and the Commonwealth Games, further cementing its reputation as one of the country’s leading producers of sporting excellence.

The official send-off, scheduled for 25 June 2026 at Future Africa on the University of Pretoria campus, will celebrate athletes who have successfully balanced academic commitments with elite sporting performance, earning the opportunity to represent both the university and South Africa on prestigious national and international stages.

For TuksSport, the occasion represents more than a ceremonial farewell. It is a reflection of a culture that continues to produce champions capable of competing at the highest level while excelling in the classroom.

The selected athletes form part of a distinguished TuksSport tradition that has produced Olympians, world-class competitors, national champions and record holders across multiple sporting disciplines.

This year’s contingent includes athletes competing in six sporting codes:

  • 3×3 Basketball
  • Hockey
  • Indoor Volleyball
  • Rugby 15s

  • Squash

The group features reigning national champions, established performers and emerging stars who are set to showcase the University of Pretoria’s sporting prowess on some of the biggest stages available to student-athletes.

TuksSport Director and High Performance Centre CEO, Steven Ball, believes the selections validate years of investment in building a culture where academic and athletic success are equally valued.

“This isn’t just a selection. It’s a validation of the culture we have built at TuksSport where academic excellence and athletic excellence aren’t compromises, they are expectations. Our athletes are proof that you can chase degrees and dreams at the same time,” said Ball.

“As they head to the USSA Championships and Commonwealth Games, they carry the pride of Tuks, the hopes of their families and the future of South African sport.”

The Stripe Generation Ready to Deliver

Among those preparing to represent the university is Luca Keun, Vice-Captain of TuksNetball, who credits the University’s support structures for helping athletes reach their full potential.

According to Keun, the journey to elite competition has been shaped by dedicated coaches, support staff and academic mentors who continually challenge student-athletes to improve.

“Representing UP at this level is one of the reasons I chose Tuks. The coaches, management team and lecturers who push us every day have all played a part in helping us get here,” said Keun.

“Now it’s time to apply everything we’ve learned and show the world what Tuks athletes are made of.”

Her sentiments reflect the ethos of what TuksSport proudly refers to as the “Stripe Generation” — athletes committed to performing above expectations both on and off the field.

Building Complete Athletes

TuksSport’s success has been built on a holistic approach to athlete development.

Beyond world-class facilities, student-athletes benefit from integrated support systems that include:

  • Personalised strength and conditioning programmes
  • Sports science services
  • Nutrition support
  • Sports psychology
  • Medical and rehabilitation services
  • Academic support structures

This comprehensive model allows athletes to pursue professional sporting ambitions while securing qualifications that prepare them for life beyond competition.

The results have been remarkable.

Over the past 12 months, TuksSport athletes have continued to dominate across multiple sporting disciplines.

Among the programme’s recent highlights:

  • TuksRugby captured the prestigious Intervarsity title.
  • Swimmers Johann Roelofse and Lyndi Roelofse secured podium finishes at the Sappi TuksRace.
  • Olympic swimmer Pieter Coetzé completed a remarkable “golden hat-trick” at the South African Championships by winning the 100m freestyle title.
  • TuksCricket claimed both the Titans Club T20 Tournament and Titans Premier League crowns.
  • Hammer thrower Colette van Rensburg (née Uys) broke the South African record with a throw of 69.21 metres.
  • Judoka Timothy Meuwsen was crowned African champion in Nairobi.

These achievements reinforce TuksSport’s position as a consistent contributor to South Africa’s elite sporting pipeline.

Eyes on the Future

As the athletes prepare to depart for competition, excitement is building around what they could achieve in the coming weeks.

The send-off event will provide an opportunity for athletes, coaches, university officials and supporters to celebrate the hard work that has brought them to this point while looking ahead to future success.

For TuksSport, the objective remains clear: continue producing student-athletes who excel academically, compete fearlessly and represent South Africa with distinction.

As they head to the USSA Championships and Commonwealth Games, these athletes will carry more than university colours. They will carry the aspirations of a programme that continues to redefine sporting excellence in higher education.

With talent, preparation and confidence on their side, the next chapter of TuksSport’s success story is ready to unfold on the national and international stage.
