Police have launched an investigation following a deadly shooting at a tavern in Riverlea that left two people dead and four others injured.

The incident occurred late on Sunday evening, sending shockwaves through the local community as gun violence continues to plague parts of Johannesburg.

According to preliminary reports, unknown gunmen allegedly entered the tavern and opened fire on patrons before fleeing the scene. Two victims were declared dead at the scene, while four others sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Emergency response teams and police officers rushed to the scene shortly after the shooting was reported, cordoning off the area as investigators began gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the deceased pending notification of their families.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, although police are investigating multiple possibilities, including targeted violence and criminal activity linked to local disputes.

Residents described scenes of panic and chaos as patrons scrambled for safety during the gunfire.

Community members have once again raised concerns over escalating violent crime in the area, calling for stronger policing and improved safety interventions to protect residents and local businesses.

The South African Police Service has urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

No arrests had been made at the time of publication, and investigations into the incident are continuing.

The shooting adds to growing concerns around tavern-related violence and firearm-related crimes in parts of Gauteng, where law enforcement agencies continue to battle organised crime, illegal firearms, and gang-related activity.
