Johannesburg / Gaborone – April 2026 — Two grassroots football teams from Southern Africa are set to step onto one of the world’s most iconic stages after being crowned winners of the Betway Manchester City “Play on the Pitch” competition — a campaign that has turned community passion into a global opportunity.

South Africa’s Movers FC and Botswana’s Amanandos FC have emerged victorious from a highly competitive selection process that drew entries from amateur teams across both countries. The initiative, driven by global betting brand Betway in partnership with Manchester City, celebrates the spirit of local football while creating pathways for aspiring players to experience the professional game firsthand.

From Local Fields to Global Stage

For Movers FC, a team rooted in Phiri, Soweto, the win represents more than just recognition — it is a breakthrough moment. Known within their community for resilience and unity, the squad has largely operated within Gauteng’s local football circuits. Their compelling video entry captured not only their footballing ability, but also the social fabric that binds the team together.

Now, they will trade familiar township pitches for elite facilities in Manchester — a transition that marks a defining chapter in the club’s journey.

Similarly, Amanandos FC from Botswana impressed judges with a disciplined and well-structured submission that highlighted their commitment to preparation and performance. Their story reflects the broader strength of community football in Botswana, where passion and structure continue to produce competitive grassroots teams.

A Celebration of Grassroots Football

According to Betway Africa’s Head of Sponsorship, Jason Shield, the competition was designed to spotlight the often-overlooked talent within amateur football.

“The Manchester City Play on the Pitch competition celebrates amateur football and the passion found in local communities,” Shield said. “Through this partnership, we are proud to offer teams like Movers FC and Amanandos FC a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The campaign required teams to submit short videos showcasing their identity, culture and connection to football. The overwhelming response underscored the depth of untapped talent across Southern Africa — and reinforced football’s enduring role as a unifying force.

The Manchester Experience

Both teams are scheduled to depart for Manchester on 17 May, where they will undergo a fully immersive football experience. This includes a professional training session at the Joie Stadium, exposure to elite matchday preparations, and ultimately, the opportunity to play on the pitch on 20 May.

For many of the players, it will be their first time travelling internationally — and their first encounter with top-tier football infrastructure.

Beyond the match itself, the experience is expected to provide invaluable insight into the professional game, from tactical preparation to performance standards, potentially shaping the ambitions of players long after the final whistle.

More Than Just a Game

While the headline prize is the chance to play in Manchester, the broader impact of the initiative lies in its recognition of community football as a critical foundation of the sport.

Movers FC and Amanandos FC represent thousands of amateur teams across the continent — teams that operate with limited resources but abundant passion. By elevating their stories, the competition not only rewards excellence but also validates the importance of grassroots development in the football ecosystem.

Eyes on the Pitch

As anticipation builds, fans are encouraged to follow the journey of both teams through Betway’s digital platforms, where behind-the-scenes content will document their transition from local heroes to international competitors.

When Movers FC and Amanandos FC finally step onto the pitch in Manchester, they will carry more than just their team colours — they will represent communities, aspirations and the enduring belief that talent, when given a platform, can transcend borders.

For these players, the dream is no longer distant. It is waiting on the pitch.
