Johannesburg, South Africa – April 2026 – South Africa’s beloved community movement, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, is set to celebrate the International Day of Creativity and Innovation with vibrant public gatherings across the country on 18 April 2026.

Bringing together knitters, crocheters, families, and supporters, the initiative continues its mission of transforming simple acts of creativity into warmth, dignity, and meaningful social impact.

A Nationwide Celebration of Creativity

From Johannesburg to Cape Town, Durban, White River, and Gqeberha, communities will unite through yarn, colour, and compassion.

In Johannesburg, the highlight event will take place at the City Centre at Steyn City, where a lively Family Day Out promises blanket displays, creative activities, and a strong sense of community spirit.

Participants are encouraged to bring their knitting needles, crochet hooks, and yarn, joining hundreds of volunteers in crafting blankets that will ultimately be distributed to vulnerable communities across South Africa.

A New Chapter in Leadership

The celebrations also mark a significant moment for the organisation, with Annie Robinson Grealy stepping into a leadership role to head up operations.

Founder Carolyn Steyn will remain actively involved at an executive level, continuing to guide the vision of the movement she launched in 2013.

Steyn welcomed the transition, saying:

“67 Blankets has always been about community and shared purpose. Annie’s passion and commitment make her the perfect person to help guide our operations as we continue to expand our impact.”

Robinson Grealy added that she is honoured to help carry the movement forward, emphasising the role of volunteers in sustaining its growth.

From Yarn to Impact

What began as a small initiative has grown into a nationwide movement, delivering handmade blankets to hospitals, shelters, schools, and communities in need.

Beyond providing warmth, the project has built powerful human connections, uniting South Africans from diverse backgrounds through a shared purpose of kindness and generosity.
