Johannesburg — As South African businesses grapple with growing skills shortages and increasing pressure to retain top performers, First National Bank (FNB) Employee Benefits has unveiled a powerful new solution designed to address one of working families’ greatest financial anxieties — the cost of education.

The newly launched FNB Education Protector introduces a specialised layer of protection within employee benefits frameworks, ensuring that children’s education remains financially secure should the unexpected occur. The solution is aimed at forward-thinking employers seeking to strengthen their employee value propositions while demonstrating deeper care for employees and their families.

Beyond Traditional Benefits

While retirement and medical aid remain cornerstones of employee benefits, they no longer address the full scope of financial vulnerabilities facing working families. Education, now one of the most significant long-term household expenses, has become a growing concern for employees navigating rising school and tertiary fees.

Recognising this, FNB Employee Benefits has introduced Education Protector as an enhancement to existing life and disability cover — offering targeted protection that ensures continuity of education for employees’ dependants in the event of death.

“Group risk cover has historically focused on income replacement and lump-sum payouts,” says Chris Cooke, Product Head at FNB Employee Benefits. “Education protection builds on that foundation by safeguarding something deeply personal to working parents — their children’s future.”

How the Benefit Works

Rather than funding education upfront, Education Protector provides guaranteed fee payments directly to schools and tertiary institutions should a covered employee pass away. This ensures that learners can continue their education without interruption, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.

The benefit extends to up to five children per employee, covering educational stages from pre-primary through to tertiary level, including honours degrees. Annual tuition cover includes:

  • Up to R70 000 for pre-primary
  • Up to R115 000 for primary school
  • Up to R135 000 for secondary school
  • Up to R100 000 per year for local tertiary institutions
  • Up to R150 000 for international tertiary studies
  • An additional R60 000 for residence costs

In addition, an annual top-up benefit is paid to guardians or students to assist with related expenses such as books, uniforms, transport and registration fees.

Built for Real-Life Education Journeys

Education Protector adapts as children progress through their schooling, incorporating built-in allowances to accommodate rising fees when learners transition between education phases. It also allows for a gap year after matric and provides inflation-linked increases to preserve the value of cover over time.

This design ensures that families receive meaningful, long-term protection that reflects real educational cost structures.

A Competitive Advantage for Employers

Beyond its social impact, the benefit offers compelling business advantages. By introducing an outcome-driven, low-complexity protection layer, employers can significantly strengthen staff loyalty and retention — key factors in a competitive employment market.

“It’s a benefit employees place enormous emotional value on,” Cooke explains. “That sense of security builds trust and long-term loyalty. And because it’s implemented at scheme level as a rider to life cover, it can be rolled out across a workforce at a relatively low cost.”

Education Protector also reduces the emotional and financial pressure employers may otherwise face to support bereaved families, providing a structured and insured solution that brings certainty to difficult circumstances.

Demonstrating Genuine Care

“In today’s skills-challenged environment, employers must do more than offer basic cover,” Cooke adds. “They are expected to show compassion and understanding. Education Protector allows employers to go beyond standard benefits and demonstrate genuine care for employees’ families — without complicating their benefits framework.”

Available to All Businesses

The Education Protector benefit is available to organisations of all sizes and can also be accessed via independent financial advisors. Employers and IFAs seeking more information can contact FNB Employee Benefits at employeebenefits@fnb.co.za or call 087 312 1947.
